The Watermark of Its Genre

Date of Review: Jul 7, 2000

What can I say about Chrono Trigger? This was a square soft game that came out in the day when gameplayed ruled the world and not graphics. This game had both in spades. The story the visuals the gameplay all were in tact to make a perfect gaming experience.

The story is very compelling. It is aout a young boy who meets a girl in a festival. This boy nmed Chrono ends up having adventures in time with this girl and his best friend Lucca. During their accidental adventures in time they meet some truly creative charactars, such as a heroic frog Cyrus, a cave girl, a futuristic robot and a evil magician named magnus. Each character becomes playable and has a unique fighting style. I think Magnus was the coolest to use. e was a cool character and he was a powerful one also. Once Magnus joined the team it was all over. Square Soft made an intruiging story line. You meet your past anscestors, and what ever you do in a different time, will affect the world in a later time. This something that could have been overlooked, but Square always makes sure to do a top notch product.

The gameplay was also stellar. There were real time battles in this bad boy. This was a concept that was rare at the time, and was only previously done in a select few games such as Secret Of Mana. You could avoid enemies if you wanted to and did not have to run into tem over and over again like Final Fantasy. Also each character had combos and super attacks such as double and triple tech hits. This was like an all powerful magic attack that was actually fun to pull off.

The bad guy was also very well done, a entity that was destroying time. Each person had his or her own reason to fight put it fit togethor to destroy lavos. The graphics were the best I have ever seen on the Super Nintendo. This made Lavos the story and all the characters more life like at the time. The game also had a touch of humor and friendshp. These were suttle but perfect for the story to unfold and play out. This game is a high mark in gaming and should not be missed by anyone.
