Chrono Trigger: Time Travel back to the 16-bit days

Date of Review: Dec 19, 1999

Considered one of the best RPGs of all time, Squaresoft decides to remake this RPG for the Playstation. Chrono Trigger was originally released for the Super Nintendo system way back in 1996. Chrono Trigger is the story of how a kid named Crono, a princess named Marle and a scientist named Lucca stumble upon time travel. In doing this they realized the world was going to end in 1999 and strive to save the world from it?s destruction. They travel through prehistoric periods, medieval periods, the present (1000 AD) and the future to track down the dark force called Lavos. The story is engaging and what is really neat is to see how you can make differences throughout the different time periods.

Chrono Trigger sports an innovative battle system where you have three characters. They each have special attacks, besides their regular attack. Though the characters can combine their attacks to make a stronger double tech or a super triple tech attack. This is where the fun lies in the battle system. With seven different characters and about 10 techniques per character the battles get pretty engaging and aren?t consistently the same.

Top all of this up with multiple endings and surprises you?ve got a game that you can replay over and over again. Chrono Trigger has a special ?New Game +? mode where you can take your old characters and play through the game again. When you play through the game a second, third, forth, or ninetieth you?ll see that you can actually change the story of the game to some extent by making different choices.

All of this is great, but the Playstation version isn?t much different from the Super Nintendo version. Sure now there are lots of anime sequences, which are great. The graphics are the same 16-bit graphics, the sound is slightly improved and the story is the same.

Bottom line if you haven?t played this you should defiantly get this for the experience or if you?re a big fan of the game then its worth it for the anime sequences, but be prepared to enter the 16 bit realm once again.
