Deserves All The Praise It Gets. One Of The Best!
Date of Review: Oct 19, 2000
This Playstation version of the incredible Chrono Trigger on the Super Nintendo suffers only because it's a Playstation CD-ROM game and not a cartridge. I am a heavy advocate of cartridge gaming. If a cartridge could hold as much data as a CD, it would be the perfect medium for gaming. However, the world isn't perfect, so those who want to try the Playstation version of this game are simply forced to live with the load times that are present on all CD games. However, apart from that, the only negative thing about this game is its length. A player who knows where to go and who to talk to can complete the game from start to finish in about 10 hours while still collecting all of the best items and weapons in the game. Square did a good job making up for this flaw by including the New Game+ option. This allows a player who has won the game to start a new game with all the experience levels, spells, and items he or she had at the end of the last game. This makes it possible to win the game at virtually any point in the story simply by entering a time gate and initiating a battle with the final enemy. If you're really good, you can fight the final boss less than 5 minutes after you start! Aside from this feature, there are so many more great things about this game. You get to know each character in depth, so you kind of get drawn into the story with them. When they feel sad, so do you. When they beat up a tough bad guy, you are glad for them. The coolest feature of this game has to be the combo attack. Up to three characters can participate in a combo, and almost every character has at least one combination that involves each of the others. There are so many options! For instance, you might use Lucca, Crono, and Robo in a 3-way combo. Lucca will set Crono's sword on fire, and Robo will swing Crono around in a circle to get all the enemies. WOW! Apart from this, there are also LOTS of little (and some not-so little) side quests that may result in the acquisition of a powerful new weapon, some sturdy armor, or just a pat on the back by some supporting character. This is a game that should be on every system. However, that probably won't happen, so get it while you can before they decide to stop making this version of it!
