Author's Review

The 1984 Twentieth Century Fox version of A Christmas Carol starring George C. Scott is in my opinion the best adaptation of this classic tale. Scott makes an excellent Scrooge whose change from Humbug to Believer is gradual and entirely compelling. The 3 spirits are enchanting, powerful and horrifying in their respective segments. The special effects are well worth the time and money invested by the film makers. The supporting cast is excellent, especially Robin Rees as the nephew Fred.

Unfortunately, Tiny Tim is still portrayed as the nauseatingly good child, with absolutely no spirit of his own. I preferred the Tiny Tim in the recent A Christmas Carol starring Patrick Stewart. At least this child seemed like a real child.

There is more detail in this movie version than in others about the hardships of Victorian life for the poor and lower classes. This makes the ability of Scrooge to help others have a more societal impact than just the usual limited circle of the Cratchet family and Scrooge's nephew.

If you like this version I also recommend A Muppet Christmas Carol. It is fun and not as scary for those with small children.
