Don't buy an Chevrolet Uplander (esp. the 2005)
Date of Review: Aug 25, 2007
The Bottom Line: Do not buy this van. Chevrolet had a great van with the Venture, I don't know what went wrong with the Uplander, but it has multiple issues!!
I had owned the previous Chevrolet Venture and had it for over 100K and it was NEVER in the shop except for regular maintance of oil changes and tires, etc.
From day 1 my uplander has been un reliable. It has been in the shop about as much as I have driven it. It would be considered a lemon except i bought it used from a dealer and my state's lemon laws are only for new cars not used ones. I bought it with 14k miles. Here are a few of the issues that we have had: the windshield came apart from the car, it literally could be wiggled if you touched it; another time I had atleast 1/4 tank of gas in it, and it wouldn't start like it didn't have gas, but it did!, horn wouldn't honk unless you had a magician's touch (on certain places and only certain days), and several other recall issues.
But the one that frustrated us the most:
After numerous mini repairs we started having issues with it starting. It was like the starter was bad already. Except when I left Target one very cold morning, it wouldn't start, then when it finally did, I got about 1 mile down the road and it SHUT OFF ON ME GOING DOWN THE ROAD!!!! Thank you Jesus that I wasn't in a car accident as a result!! It wouldn't restart. I called a tow truck and the dealer I bought it from and had it towed in. The dealer stated that it needed a new starter and the new starter would be $500 , we questioned why a starter would be needed so soon. So we began to do some research online and found out others had the same problem. Some people had even replaced the starter 2-3 times and still had this issue. I called the dealer back and told him this. He did a search on my vin # and found out that mine qualified for engine replacement. I guess if you question them on the starter then they will admit that it's the engine that needs to be replaced. But they haven't done a full recall, I guess they don't want to pay for all of those new engines. I guess they would prefer to have their customers stuck on the side of the road or endangering their lives when it cuts off on them going down the highway!! THE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED WITH ONLY 42K MILES ON THIS VAN!! Here are me and my son (3 yr old) in the coldest day in NC in 2years, stuck on the side of the road with no heat, nothing. And if you are starting to think that maybe I just got one of many made that happen to have this issue,....I know 2 others that have 2005 uplanders and both are having the starter issues and are in the process of talking to the dealer they purchased from about engine replacement.
