2003 Chevrolet Impala (Base)
Pros:
Very pleasing aesthetics, great gas mileage, good comfort, good performance.
Cons:
Aftermarket stereo not an easy upgrade.
The Bottom Line:
Looks and rides better than the Taurus, better interior than the Grand Prix, and more mechanically sound than the Intrepid.

Author's Review
I chose the base model over the LS mainly because of the dealer inventory. The LS's in my price range had steel wheels/hubcaps and XM Satellite radio, which I did not want. The black base model that I picked has cruise control, front & rear floor mats, cargo net, "oh sh!t" handles with lights, visors with extenders and lighted mirrors, AM/FM/CD/Cassette premium sound system, overhead console, heated outside mirrors, 5 spoke aluminum wheels, and 6 way power driver's seat.
It rides quite nicely, and the 3.4 V6 engine delivers plenty of power. It has only 20 less HP that the 3.8 LS, and will still get you to highway speed quickly. The 3.4 also delivers 32 MPG on the highway, better than the 3.8 by 3 MPG.
