Product Review

ZR-2 Off-Road Package

by   hogsnine ,   Jan 14, 2003

Pros:  ZR-2 option is as functional as it is muscular looking

Cons:  Gas mileage could be better

The Bottom Line:  If ride isn't a concern, the S-10 ZR-2 package is a great value. An overall dependable, fun-to-drive truck.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars
Ease of Loading: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I traded in a '93 Lumina Z-34 last year for this truck which I have been looking at since '96. I ordered it with the ZR-2 suspension and appearance package. This package comes standard with the extended cab, third door, sliding rear window, 31.5" tires, and off-road type components on the chassis including skid plates. The truck drives suprisingly well on-road. I have a decent commute to work everyday and it is comfortable and somewhat smooth. I'm not going to tell you this has a "car-like" ride. This is all truck, but it's also not overbearing. The engine powering this truck is the dependable 4.3L Vortec V-6. The gearing in the rear-end allows for quick starts off the line. It drives pretty well on the highway also, being mated with the 4 speed automatic. The truck never feels like it wants to tip around corners either. It handles corners better than can be expected (remembering this is an off-road truck, not a Corvette). You will encounter some road noise. The 31.5" meats have an aggressive tread pattern which produce most of this noise. It's not too bad though. The interior is roomy for two, however, the fold down seat in the back is laughable. The dashboard has large guages positioned right where they should be. The bucket seats are more than comfortable enough, even for a long road trip. Something that is overlooked at times with vehicles like this is third party accessories. There are many add-ons available from nerf bars to performance parts. I've owned this truck a year now and have used it both on and off-road. I can honestly say that this is a great value (at just over $20k) and a great performer. I highly recommend it.
