Author's Review
My husband and I bought our 2001 Chevy Blazer (4 Door) used, with about 30,000 miles on it if I remember right. We've had it for over a year now and I love it.
The main negative point is simply that being a small SUV, it's more likely to rollover. I have to bear this in mind when driving it. It may be of particular concern to those (such as me) who are "driving klutzes" or to those (also like me) who enjoy driving dirt back roads and camping.
It has MANY positive aspects. My parents have a suburban, and I find it rather awkward and tiring to drive on account of its size and mass. However, I did not want a very small vehicle because I was looking for the safety a larger vehicle would provide. The Chevy Blazer combines these features nicely, although I would prefer if it was slightly bigger than it is.
Our Blazer is very comfortable to drive, with comfortable steering response and a nice medium between the "big heavy suburban feel" and the "little tiny matchbox car feel". It is relatively easy to park. I like the layout of the instrument panel, with easy to read gauges. The only problem is that sometimes in daylight the digital ones are hard to see. The controls are relatively simple and seem standardized to other recent Chevy vehicles.
Our Blazer has a tailgate that lowers down, and a hatch that opens upward. I recommend this because it makes a nice place to sit (especially if you like camping), and you can choose to open only the hatch for taking things in and out if you prefer. I also highly recommend the "under the car" mounted spare tire instead of the one which is mounted on the back door.
For camping, our Blazer works great. The back seats fold down and it is quite comfortable in there with sleeping bags and an eggcrate foam pad on the floor. It is also very convenient for carrying things. Unlike a pickup truck, you can lock the items inside and protect them from the weather and from theft. You will not have as much space, but it depends on what you are hauling! Of course the roofrack can be used as well.
We prefer our fabric seats to leather. In Arizona, leather seats can become very hot in the summer time! The fabric also is very comfortable and prevents you from slipping all over the place.
Our Blazer is quite quiet while driving, allowing for easy conversation. The air conditioner is FANTASTIC... very cold very fast- a huge plus in an Arizona vehicle. The heater also works very well.
One small negative is that in the four wheel drive version, you will see that there is a bump under the floor in the front passenger seat. This can become somewhat uncomfortable during a long drive, but for us, the 4WD was worth it. Also, it would be nice if the headlights were just a little brighter. The brights work very well.
The Blazer handles back-roading admirably in our limited experience, although we wish it had higher clearance. We had a little trouble with the 4WD not working... apparently this was due to a vacuum hose that sometimes comes undone in these vehicles. You may need a mechanic to fix this.
I love driving our Blazer and expect to be happy with it for years to come. From my experience, I would recommend it!
