Great trio!!!!

For those of you not old enough to remember the television show (I’m one of them), or just simply never watched the show, Angels was about three sexy secret agents who worked for the Charles Townsend Detective Agency. The Angels (and viewers) never saw Charlie, but he assigned their cases via phone calls to an intermediary named Bosley, portrayed here by Bill Murray.

Cases were neatly wrapped up each week, and the pistol-wielding Angels were always sure to find themselves in another precarious predicament in exactly seven days' time.

Here, the pistol-less Angels are played by Cameron Diaz (Any Given Sunday), Drew Barrymore (Never Been Kissed) and Lucy Liu (Shanghai Noon), who play, respectively, the brain, the muscle and the daredevil of the outfit. They’re a giggly group of girls (think Powerpuff) who, for some reason, are forced to assume secret identities to blend into society. Angels’ opening credits show clips of each of the character’s childhood before launching into a hysterical montage of all things ‘70s.

The case in this flick involves the kidnapping of software genius and multi-millionaire, Eric Knox (Sam Rockwell). Eric’s business partner, Vivian Wood (Kelly Lynch), hires the Angels to track down Knox’s chief nemesis, Roger Corwin played by Tim Curry. Vivian believes that Corwin kidnapped Knox to obtain Knox’s newest software code, which has potentially dangerous satellite-tracking technology, which supposedly tracks anyone's voice anywhere in the world.

So the girls get on it. They decide to go incognito as Asian masseuses, race car drivers, dominatrix efficiency experts and even lowly men in order to catch Corwin. The closer they get to finding Knox, the more danger they encounter. They become targets for this psychotic assassin, Crispin Glover. He is set loose to stop them from getting too close to the truth.

If you ever watched the original series you will able to see the plot “twists” coming a mile away. The difference between the original series and this movie is the transformation of the women from P.I.’s to super heroes. Sure, the TV series stars were off the chart gorgeous but their talents were grounded in reality. These new Angels are straight from fantasy land as they perform aerial acrobatic sequences, dodging bullets, karate chopping foes and surviving explosions with not even a scratch. Director McGee must have been totally inspired by “The Matrix”, because the film’s influence is felt in each and every action scene

The film works best when it capitalizes on the triple threat charms exuded by the leads. Diaz, Barrymore and Liu are drop dead gorgeous. The camera loves them and the trio truly seems to enjoy each other. Be it Diaz’s goofy dance number, Liu’s dominatrix turn or Barrymore’s pit crew pin-up scene, each lady gets a particular moment to shine and those scenes are the most fun in the film.

Say what you will about Hollywood churning out films based on old television series, but Charlie’s Angels might be the best female-led action flick to be produced. Not only is it funny, but Angels’ action sequences are just as good as any blockbuster released this past summer.

I truly recommend this film to anyone.
