Product Review

Great sub for HUGE bass

by   adam728 ,   Sep 17, 2002

Pros:  Capable of being very loud, sound pretty good

Cons:  Tinsles are too short for the throw these are capable of

The Bottom Line:  Very good sub if you have the space and the power. Very good performer for the size and money.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I don't own these, but I installed a pair in my friend's 1998 Ford Escort ZX-2.

These subs have been around for quite a while and have earned a reputation as being a good spl sub. My buddy picked up a used pair and wanted me to build him a box. Turns out due to the shape of the trunk opening (from the rear and through the boot) and the airspace we wanted, this wansn't going to happen. So each sub has it's own 2.4 cubic foot ported enclosure, tuned to about 33 Hz.

To tell the truth, after hearing a lot about these subs I didn't expect much for sound quality. But being in a larger enclosure with relativly low tuning they sound very good. They don't hit the higher bass as quickley as say, my sisters Infinity Perfect, but they sound plenty good enough for almost anyone's daily driver.

The first setup used an Autotech SS600.4 amp, the front channels bridged to one sub and the rear to the other. Wiring is 4 guage, alt and battery are stock. The car suffered no dimming of lights, although the idle rpms varied slightly (like 50 rpm) with bass, so it was loading the stock alternator pretty heavily. The amp was rated to send 300 rms to each sub. They played loud, and played clear. Everyone that heard them made him open the trunk to prove that only 2 tens were making all the ruckus. One kid who is a Sony Xplode diehard got VERY upset when the tens were far louder than his 4 Xplode 12's (which did 139 db). Never had the setup metered, but I am guessing (heard a lot of cars) that it was in the 141-142 db range. I have yet to hear another setup with 2 tens come close.

The second setup is basically the same, but the amp died (that's what he gets for letting someone borrow it!) so it was replaced with a Memphis ST1000D (rated at 1100 rms to the pair). The subs POUND now! They are loud for anything, let alone a pair of tens. Unfortunatly they aren't going to last long. They are definitly getting pushed past their limits, as the tinsels kept breaking. A little extending has kept them going, but they HAVE to be hurting. The pair has been getting hammered by the amp for about 6 weeks now, and still won't quit though.

I would recommend these subs to someone that has the power and the space to use them. I was very impressed by their performance, and ability to sound pretty good while hammering away. They are ONLY for ported boxes, and using a large box with a good sized port (we used 4"x4" slot port if I remember right) will get good results.
