Product Review

A great learning tool

by   etherview ,   Oct 10, 2006

Pros:  Excellent Learning Tool Amazing accuracy Easy and Intuitive to use Love the audio Nice case

Cons:  Uses 2 AA batteries too quickly.

The Bottom Line:  The SkyScout is a great tool for learning about the wonders of the night sky. I would highly recommend it especially for those new to astronomy.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I purchased the SkyScout a couple of days ago and it worked much better than I had expected. I was amazed that it not only new where I was (Long, Lat) but it knew the direction and angle I pointed it in.

I had only a cursory read of the quick start guide and was anxious to use it. I installed the batteries (not included), hooked up the ear buds and headed out to explore the night sky. After powering up the SkyScout and waiting for it to acquire the satellites - about 5 minutes, I hit the identify button and pointed at Vega. Amazingly, when I hit the target button, the SkyScout correctly identified Vega and when I selected audio it played a brief set of facts about Vega. After I tried a few more stars I pointed at the Moon and yes it correctly identified it. Darn - not other planets available that night.

Then I pressed the locate button and selected M31 (Andromeda) from the list of items in the SkyScope's database and the SkyScope correctly pointed me to the galaxy. Whow!!!

A great tool to learn about the night sky!!! I wish my telescope was this accurate.
