Author's Review
Well, I just purchased my very own EX-S600!! I have to say, I am VERY impressed with this camera. This guy is just tiny!! At a little larger in outward dimensions as a business card and not very thick at all, it fits quite nicely into ones shirt pocket or just about anywhere else!
The build quality appears to be excellent, the only questionable area (as with most digital cameras) is the battery & SD card door. I got mine in the very cool orange color. It feels pretty substantial, despite it's light weight and tiny size.
This little camera is chock full o' features, I will try to give an accounting of my favorites, in no particular order:
Aspheric lens. There IS a difference!
3X optical zoom (38 - 114mm, F 2.7 - 5.2) My old Canon SD10 only had digital. The Casio has an additional 4x digital zoom.
MPEG4 instead of the usual Quick time movies. anyone can replay them. Even mom.
30 frames per second video, instead of the usual 15 f.p.s.
what an amazing difference, no more jerky videos!
480x560 video vs. the usual 320x240. a much clearer view!
You can actually zoom in and out while doing video. This is an unusual feature that makes sense, yet is not common.
A full selection of modes (34 of them!), fun to experiment with, though I tend to stick with automatic.
Super high capacity battery, it's output is amazing for it's
size. They say 300 shots (in favorable conditions) I feel no need to bring an extra battery in most circumstances
2.2 inch LCD view screen. This is a great feature for us 50 year olds! And.. it is very bright and can be seen in bright light!
The camera comes with a multi cradle, which also doubles as the battery charger as well as a direct connection to download your pictures to your computer via USB. The box also contains a strap as well as cables to hook up your TV.
The NIMH battery is included, but no useless tiny capacity SD card. The camera does have a small (I believe 8mb) internal memory.
Minimal "shutter lag" and very fast boot up!
Of great importance is that the 6 megapixel produces a wonderfully sharp picture, and going down to 4 megapixels (just to add some additional capacity) still produces a great picture. The zoom seems to have minimal barreling or pincushioning and the colors are good. The image stabilization is a nice addition, as this camera is so small and light that it is hard to hold perfectly still on slower shutter speeds.
Though this is a new camera for me and it hasn't had the rigorous field testing that I tend to give a pocket sized digital, I have a feeling that it will do just fine. I have only put about 150 shots through it so far, but.. so far..so good!
It should also be noted that like most tiny digital cameras these days, there is no optical viewfinder, only the LCD.
As I use this camera, should I feel that revisions are needed for this review, I will do them!!
Have fun and enjoy your digital camera!
