Author's Review
I have the task of taking and uploading hundreds of digital photos for a consulting firm, so i have to have the right tools. I am currently selecting a full time camera to use as my workhorse. As I always used Canon Rebels 35mm film cameras, so i decided to give this beast a workout on the digital format. I really like this model because i can still use all my older lenses that i collected with my 35mm rebel.
The Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT is designed with an 8.0 megapixel CMOS color sensor. The CMOS uses a low pass filter to make images in a 3:2 aspect ratio format.
Being a film raised shooter, converting to the digital SLR world, using 8.0 megapixels is really nice for any serious photographer. For printing larger than letter size 8.5 x 11 inches, 8 megapixels will make stunning sharp prints and equally sharp 13 x 19 inch prints. And if you have the printer to do it, you can even larger and get good image quality.
The Rebel XT is available in both black and silver housings, and different lenses can be attached to the EF-S mount. Very similar to my old film Rebels, the right hand grip runs down the left side of the frame and the bottom of the grip is coated with rubber. The shutter release button is at the tip of the slanted edge and has a jog dial above it. At the top of the grip is a circular AF illuminator light and the pop up flash element. The flash is rectangular and has two legs hooking it to the Canon logo. The flash has four modes: Auto, Manual, On Off, and Red eye. There is also a flash compensation mode and eight customizable flash metering modes. The flash takes about 3 seconds to recycle.
On the back there are buttons on both sides of the LCD screen. Left side buttons are Menu, Info, Jump, Playback, and Delete. Right side buttons control the exposure compensation and the bottom button activates the timer and continuous shooting function. Below these buttons is the four way dial. You can set the ISO, change auto focus modes, adjust white balance, and switch metering modes.
The heart of this camera is the Canon image processor called DIGIC. This processor improves picture quality and autofocus and gives a faster image processing speed.
DIGIC operation: numerous pixels are processed simultaneously with each clock cycle, performing image processing functions with off the chart speeds.
Like i said before, the Rebel XT is compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses. The camera is available in a kit, and the lens that is included with the Canon Rebel kit is the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-f/5.6. This adds over a hundred bucks to the price.
The Rebel XT ships with ArcSoft PhotoStudio 5.5. which is a decent photo editing package.
In conclusion, the Canons XT is perfect for the general consumer. Many of the features make this XT a point-and-shoot SLR, bit it also packs many added features and precision elements that make it a professionals choice also.
