Product Review

Canon Rebel 2000-even journalists (like me) use and love it!

by   caurieanne ,   Dec 19, 2000

Pros:  Pictures are so good they make someone with no photography experience look like a pro; easy to use; light weight; lots of features

Cons:  Expensive. Not the type of camera you would hand to a stranger on the street and ask "Can you take a picture of me in front of this fountain?"

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

When I applied for a job as a newspaper reporter two years ago at a small, but highly regarded, weekly paper, I had all the job requirements except one: photography skills. Much to my pleasure, though, the editors liked my written work and decided to take a gamble on me even though the only pictures I had ever taken in my life were terrible and taken with cruddy cameras.

“Don’t worry,” the managing editor assured me when hiring me, “We’ll get you a camera that will get great photos with only a shoot and click.”

Now, newspaper editors (as anyone in the journalism field knows) are not always right, but in this case he was more then correct.

The newspaper bought me a Canon Rebel G camera that I feel in love with from my first roll. Not only was this camera a cinch for a photography ignoramus like me to use, it produced awesome pictures with virtually no effort. And, I am not just talking about the simple “passing the check pictures” you see in the newspaper of a business person handing a donation to the representative of a charitable organization while the photographer says “look at me and say ‘cheese.’” I am talking real, photojournalistic, stuff.

I used this camera to shoot wide assortment of pictures — ranging from action shots of dance performances and parades to nature shots of ducks and landscapes. Dozens of my photos were published in the company’s papers and several were of such good quality that readers even purchased the prints for framing. The newspaper also employed full-time professional photojournalists with big, high tech, cameras for trickier shots (like fires, sports, or famous people), but many of my photos taken with the little Rebel G were printed in color on the front page for thousands to see. These photos definitely looked professional and made me look as if I had training in photography myself (which I certainly did not).

When I left the paper last year, I was so sad that I would have to leave my Rebel G behind (we had become virtually joined at the hip) that my sweet fiancé bought me one for my birthday. I was so excited! And, not only did he get me the Rebel G, he got me the Canon EOS Rebel 2000, which is just the newer model of the Rebel G. I, myself, noticed few differences in the cameras besides their color (the 2000 is silver, while the older model was black) and the 2000 is a tad more compact. Also, the button to release the film is located on the side of the Rebel 2000 camera, as opposed to the top like before. I like this change because it makes accidental discharge of the film harder. Besides that, the 2000 is virtually identical to its older sister and still takes incredible pictures with minimal effort or skill.

Some basic technical details about the Canon EOS Rebel 2000 I should share with you are that: it is a compact, auto focus, single-lens reflex camera with built-in flash and red-eye reduction. It is fully automatic and has several user-controlled picture-taking modes, including: full auto mode, portrait mode, landscape mode, close-up mode, sports mode, and night scene mode. All the modes are really cool and can be easily changes with a little turn of a dial on top of the camera. They do not require different lenses or speeds. The Rebel 2000 also has a self-timer and optional date or time imprint. The user manual is very extensive and easy to understand, as is the camera itself.

I cannot say enough good things about this camera! I absolutely love it! The only negative I can think of is that it is pricey. You can get automatic 35 mm cameras for less, but the quality you get with this camera is so worth the price if you can afford it. This camera attracts attention wherever I bring it. I have had strangers come up to me who have the same camera and say: “Isn’t that the best camera ever!” and I have had others, whom I have trusted to use it (like my siblings) say it is fun and the coolest camera to use.

Whenever I show people the pictures I’ve taken with my Rebel 2000, too, they are so impressed and ask for copies. My fiancé and I are even planning to use a photograph of us snapped by someone using my Rebel 2000 as our engagement picture for the newspapers. We went to a studio and had some taken by a professional, but the pictures of us taken with the Rebel 2000 are much better!
