Professional Point and Shoot

Date of Review: Aug 3, 2008

The Bottom Line:  If you want the best point and shoot camera, buy the G9.
Let me start off by saying that this is just about the best point and shoot camera available right now. This is also the camera that professional photographers use as their pocket, go everywhere camera. The main reason why this camera is so popular with the professionals and astute amateurs is that it is one of the few point and shoot cameras that supports the RAW format.

What is RAW? RAW is an image format that is similar to JPG, GIF, TIFF, etc… Its uniqueness is that it is the only format that retains all the information from the camera's image sensor. In other words it's the "raw" camera data that is full and uncompressed. The majority of other point and shoot cameras output to JPG. These cameras take all the "raw" data, throw away what IT thinks is unnecessary, and then compresses the image. This is all done by a 30cent microchip. Most people who are serious about photography would rather do the compression their self or trust a $600 (like photoshop) to do it.

In addition, this camera allows for full manual control which is a must have for any serious photographer.
Other than that, all the components in this camera are top notch including the sensor, lens, and body.
