Fantastic machine. Cheap ink. Bye bye HP!
Date of Review: May 22, 2006
The Bottom Line: Run, don't walk, to buy one if you can find 'em.
Can you fall in love with a machine?
We were HP loyalists for twenty years. They were durable and reliable. But we became fed up with the cost of ink cartridges, terrible customer support, and -- the final straw -- HP's refusal to upgrade their XP driver for our 7 year old Officejet T45xi, which turned a perfectly functioning machine into a large paperweight. Their recommended solution: buy a new HP!
In retrospect, I should thank HP for giving us a shove, because after getting the Pixma MP780 I'm kicking myself for suffering so long with HP.
Best news: We buy refilled black ink cartridges on ebay for under $1.50 -- that's not a typo -- and they work just fine.
Other things we love about the MP780.
- if paper misfeeds slightly, it backs it out and refeeds it until it gets it aligned right
-- has two paper trays, each holds about 100 sheets, and automatically switches when one runs out.
-- allows flat-bed copying for books, etc., plus the automatic document feeder works great.
-- its 2x as fast as our HP Officejet
-- so many features we haven't even discovered them all yet
-- terrific customer service; friendly, no wait, and 48 hr. replacement on warranty
-- duplex (2-sided) printing, reverse order printing; i.e. all the bells-and-whistles. We're still discovering new features all the time.
I gather that they were discontinued recently in favor of a newer model. Last time I saw them they were on sale for about $175; an incredible bargain.
Oh, and thinking about selling short HP stock. . .
