Author's Review
Just wanted to update the review with new information. This calculator is still working well but the paper holder broke and, since my husband uses the paper and prints things out, I went back to Office Max to find a replacement. After looking them all over (in that price range) I brought home a new printing calculator and found to my astonishment that it is the same model. The paper holders on all of these inexpensive machines are kind of flimsy but this one lasted two and a half years and that's pretty good for a $15.99 machine. Buying the same one is a sure way to know that this is a great machine! Buy and enjoy and hope that your paper holder lasts.
For my birthday, a couple of years ago, I received two printing calculators. One my husband bought me and the other I bought myself for my husband to give me. Surprises on your birthday sure can surprise you! After looking both of them over and trying them out, we decided to keep both of them. The other model was the Casio that I did a review on a while ago. Now, Id like to share my experiences with the Canon Desktop Printing Calculator. The Casio sits on my kitchen table so that as we discuss around the table at night, it is handy to quickly plug in the figures that we always seem to be discussing.
This Canon model sits on our desk in the den. This is where my husband does his bookkeeping and where I go when I need peace and quiet to figure bills or calculate grades. The model has a great price tag. It was on sale for $19.99 when we purchased it and today it costs about the same amount.
I was looking for a calculator that had digital figures big enough for me to see without using my reading glasses. This model is prefect. In fact, the box advertises the Easy To Read Extra Large Display along with an actual example of the both the print out size and the display size.
I have a quirk about this kind of calculator. I like to have the position of the minus key on the right hand side of the numbers. I used another calculator for years and got used to having it located there. Not many models have it here. When I was looking for the one I bought, the only available model was the Casio. My husband found this one. There are lots of calculators that you can find if you dont need this requirement. However, Im so happy with this model that Im glad I had that requirement because otherwise I may have purchased a different model or manufacturer and may not have liked it nearly as well as I do this one.
This printer produces a paper print out that uses two colors. Black for pluses and red for minuses. This is a feature that I rarely use. My husband, on the other hand, always has the machine print out the figures hes using. The ink roller is easy to buy and easy to install. The paper is inexpensive for a roll and is a standard size so easy to find. There is a little tab at the top of the calculator face, just below the display, which allows you to click it to On/Off/ or Print.
There is another tab next to this one that lets you set up the decimal point. This calculator is a ten-digit calculator so, if youre a billionaire and need a calculator to figure up your worth you may need a different model.
There is a dual power source. You can use the AC Adapter that is included with your purchase or you can use 4 AA batteries. AC/DC operation. I always use the batteries because it makes this small, lightweight calculator more portable. I really like that the batteries last a long time when using batteries. This model is easy to carry with you and set up on a desk anywhere. Before I started putting my grades in a computer program, this calculator traveled many places with me. *Remember that this is not a hand-held size but is a small desktop calculator. The manufacturer calls it a Mini Desktop Printing Calculator.
The keyboard is very easy to use. The keys are large enough for any sized hand and are spaced apart well enough that it deters input errors.
The calculator functions include: adding, subtracting, multiplying, division, and percentages. This calculator also offers memory features. I seldom use them but its nice to have the option.
One thing that I have noticed as a negative about this model is that it is not very quiet. When adding up numbers and printing them out, you can be heard in the next room. It offers silent operation when not using the printing feature.
Another negative is that the paper holder becomes easily dislodged from the raised arms that hold it. I find this to be true of my other printing calculator too, so maybe the manufacturers need to find a better way to mount and hold the roll of paper.
The color of this model is a putty or tan color. It shows dirt and fingerprints (especially when youre changing the colored print tape) but it has a hard plastic casing that washes off easily with soap and water.
So, do I recommend this printing calculator to you? Yes, I do. I think that for normal household accounting, this model will do a fine job at an inexpensive price.
