Well-Deserved Reputation

Probably most of you reading this review are familiar with the amazing reputation of Canon's 70-200 L zoom lenses. I have used all but the F4 IS variation, and am here to say the reputation is well-earned.

I originally had planned on purchasing the 70-200/2.8L IS version, but between the cost and my typical subjects I decided to forgo the Image Stabilization. I am amazed at the difference, my non-IS lens is sharper than the IS copies I've used in the past. This lens is truly magical; cutting-sharp even wide open at f2.8, distortion-free, and excellent saturation. I really cannot fault the optics at all, this lens rivals the quality of a prime.

Being in Canon's L line, every aspect of the lens is top quality. It's built like a tank and will probably outlast me. The zoom and manual focus rings function smoothly.

Really the only drawbacks are the cost, weight, and attention it draws. However, it's worth every penny. The weight is the price you pay for the fast speed. Not much to do about the classic Canon "big white lens" except accept it.

If you need a fast zoom in this range, there is no better lens.
