Great DSLR

The 30D is a very efficient camera, it fits the hand ergonomically, it does what it should and does it well. The wheels that change settings like F-stop and Aperature are right there for you, no need to take your eye away from the camera or go into a menu to change the important parameters. It starts up very quickly and no shutter lag if you first focus with the halfway down on the shutter button in the autofocus mode. Manual focus is awesome.
Canon Lenses are very technically good so far as the ones I own, cannot speak for the ones I do not own.
I have not found any dead pixels and have owned the camera for 8 mos without any problems really.
Personally, I do not feel I need the improvements that were made in the 40D so am not sorry I did not wait for the 40D. The one thing actually I wish I had was the automatic cleaning of the sensor.
If you find a 30D for a good price I would not hesitate to buy one. Canon updates about every 18 or so months so no matter what you buy it is outmoded very shortly.
How many more pixels does a person need than what you have with the 30D unless you want to enlarge to make roadside huge billboards or you want to crop out the who picture except for one thing and there for that there are never enough pixels to crop to a object that is 1/50th or smaller of the original picture and you want it an 8x10 picture.
