Showing its age, but well worth the money

Date of Review:  Mar 24, 2009
The Bottom Line:

This is a great speacialized lens for the landscape/wildlife photographer, and is likely to be very good for the sports photographer as well.

Review: Canon is known for their world class "L" Series optics, and the reputation is well deserved.  In fact, it was that red line on the end of the lenses that drove me to choose Canon over Nikon.  My initial purchase included three "L" Series lenses...

An amateur buys a pro lens

Date of Review:  Jun 24, 2000
Review: This is a lens designed for professional use, and it has all the benefits and drawbacks of Canon's L series of lenses. I bought it to replace the Canon 75-300 f4.0-5.6 lens--I was dissatisfied with the optical quality and lack of image...

A LOT of lens and a LOT of satisfaction!

Date of Review:  Sep 8, 2005
The Bottom Line: I bought this lens because I love wildlife. I am getting pictures I never dreamed I would ever get. It cost loads but was worth it!
Review: It is always hard to know where to start with lenses like this as I don't want to tell you just things you can work out from the title. So telling you it has a wide focal range is pointless, of course it does. The aperture range is decent for this...

Comparison with Sigma 80-400, Sigma 50-500 and Tamron 200-500

Date of Review:  Jun 27, 2007
The Bottom Line: What I really want (a stabilized, fast-focusing 500mm zoom for under $1500) doesn't exist. This is the next best thing.
Review: Note: I originally reviewed this exact product two years ago, and it has been one of my more popular reviews. For some reason, the original review disappeared from Epinion's search engine results. Hence, I've resubmitted it with minor corrections...

Not perfect, but better does not exist (yet).

Date of Review:  Aug 27, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you own a Canon camera, and need a zoom to go beyond 200mm, this is the best thing available.
Review: First, a quick admission. I also own a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 L lens. That lens is simply the finest in existence for that zoom range, in terms of quality and ease of use. So if my needs fall under 200mm, I do not use the 100-400mm lens. The image...

Not for the faint of heart!

Date of Review:  Nov 26, 2000
Review: This Canon lens is for serious photographers only. I use this lens for day and nighttime athletic contests. This lens allows slower shutter speeds while hand-holding. Optics are of highest quality. A bit on the heavy and long side, not a lens to...

Canon EF100-400/4.5-5.6L IS - Canon Designed this Lens for Stunning Images!

Date of Review:  Oct 10, 2009
The Bottom Line: If you are going on a once in a lifetime vacation to an exotic locale, you must take along this lens to capture your memories.
Review: A few months ago it was time for me to replace my aging Canon EF lens for a more efficient variable zoom lens that took extra sharp images. This lens would be use for my youth sports photography business. The lens I chose had to be resilient because...

Great Lens, bicep curls required

Date of Review:  May 14, 2002
The Bottom Line: If you're still when shooting hand-held you will love throwing away your tripod for zoom shots. If you're weak may want to beef up before you buy.
Review: I bought this lens for my Canon D30 digital camera. I wanted a zoom lens to take wildlife photos without having to sneak up on animals. This lens is terrific for that kind of work and several other applications.

One review mentioned that...

A serious lens for serious photographers!

Date of Review:  Dec 6, 2006
The Bottom Line: If you are serious about sports or wildlife photography, this a very useful lens.
Review: This lens is a major purchase, as the typical retail price is $1,400. However, if you are keen on sports or wildlife photography the price is fully justified.

The image quality is superb, very sharp, great colours. I first used this lens...

best lens in this range

Date of Review:  May 21, 2001
The Bottom Line: This lens does a super job, If you need a higher power zoom lens, and quality of results are what you want, this is the lens for you.
Review: This lens is large, heavy and fairly expensive (aprox. $1600), but if you take pictures at action events, or candid shots of wildlife, you will find nothing else that will give you the range and quality of pictures that this lens will.
You can...
