A LOT of lens and a LOT of satisfaction!

by   hopetest ,  Sep 8, 2005
Pros: Sharp, well-built, excellent IS and USM, superb range
Cons: Heavy to carry around, expensive (but worth it!)
The Bottom Line: I bought this lens because I love wildlife. I am getting pictures I never dreamed I would ever get. It cost loads but was worth it!
Review: It is always hard to know where to start with lenses like this as I don't want to tell you just things you can work out from the title. So telling you it has a wide focal range is pointless, of course it does. The aperture range is decent for this range ...

An amateur buys a pro lens

by   northrup ,  Jun 24, 2000
Pros: Incredible image quality, image stabilization
Cons: BIG, HEAVY AND EXPENSIVE
Review: This is a lens designed for professional use, and it has all the benefits and drawbacks of Canon's L series of lenses. I bought it to replace the Canon 75-300 f4.0-5.6 lens--I was dissatisfied with the optical quality and lack of image stabilization....

A serious lens for serious photographers!

by   straightarm ,  Dec 6, 2006
Pros: Image quality, image stabilising feature, zoom range
Cons: Not cheap
The Bottom Line: If you are serious about sports or wildlife photography, this a very useful lens.
Review: This lens is a major purchase, as the typical retail price is $1,400. However, if you are keen on sports or wildlife photography the price is fully justified. The image quality is superb, very sharp, great colours. I first used this lens to photograph ...

High quality, durable, a great general purpose zoom tele-lens for off-hand or tripod shooting.

by   ibdeeter ,  Jul 3, 2004
Pros: Rugged, good zoom range, great quality optics, hefty weight for added stability at higher magnifications.
Cons: A bit pricey for the low budget crowd ( me ).
The Bottom Line: If you want top quality, expect to pay for it. This lens IS top quality and rugged. Definitely for me, a keeper.
Review: I've been using this lens almost daily for nearly 2 months now and I am liking it very much. I was a bit put off at first by the push-pull zoom until I discovered its great benefit for those times where you need a quick offhand shot in conditions where ...

A must for serious wildlife photographers

by   traci1013 ,  Feb 28, 2008
Pros: Clear, sharp pictures, easy to work.
Cons: Heavier lens.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this lens to anyone who is serious about photography that requires keeping a distance (for me that's wildlife). It's well worth the investment.
Review: Years ago I had built up quite the Minolta collection - complete with a 100mm-400mm lens that I loved. Alas, the age of digital came upon us and I was forced to switch over. Given the cost of that, the zoom lens I went with for years was the Tamron ...

Great Lens, bicep curls required

by   hawklady99 ,  May 14, 2002
Pros: Image quality, Image stabilization, sturdy, non-rotating zoom
Cons: cost, weight (unavoidable)
The Bottom Line: If you're still when shooting hand-held you will love throwing away your tripod for zoom shots. If you're weak may want to beef up before you buy.
Review: I bought this lens for my Canon D30 digital camera. I wanted a zoom lens to take wildlife photos without having to sneak up on animals. This lens is terrific for that kind of work and several other applications.

One review mentioned that the...

OUTSTANDING lens!!

by   andgott ,  Mar 24, 2008
Pros: Super sharp, Fast focus, great zoom range.
Cons: Heavy
The Bottom Line: Buy it. Yes, it's an investment- But it's quality optical equipment, and it'll last you forever if you take care of it
Review: Typical of 'L' series lenses- this is a great, super sharp lens that is HIGHLY recommended! I have never used a better piece of equipment. I shoot wildlife- Birds for the most part. I like to shoot handheld, because I get a lot of 'candids' that I ...

best lens in this range

by   bridegam ,  May 21, 2001
Pros: Great Photographic results-built like a tank
Cons: size weight and cost
The Bottom Line: This lens does a super job, If you need a higher power zoom lens, and quality of results are what you want, this is the lens for you.
Review: This lens is large, heavy and fairly expensive (aprox. $1600), but if you take pictures at action events, or candid shots of wildlife, you will find nothing else that will give you the range and quality of pictures that this lens will.
You...

Not for the faint of heart!

by   gunner69 ,  Nov 26, 2000
Pros: Image Stab. Great optics. Flexibility
Cons: Heavy, long.
Review: This Canon lens is for serious photographers only. I use this lens for day and nighttime athletic contests. This lens allows slower shutter speeds while hand-holding. Optics are of highest quality. A bit on the heavy and long side, not a lens to tote...

JUST WHAT I NEEDED

by   b-1938 ,  May 19, 2005
Pros: WHAT A GREAT COMBINATION
Cons: NONE
Review: I HAVE A CANON 20D AND HAD THE 75-300 LENS, HARD TO HOLD STILL WITH THE LIGHTER LENS, BUT WITH THE HEAVY LENS AND THE SUPER IMAGE STABILIZER, WOW DON'T HAVE TO USE THE TRIPOD ALL THE TIME NOW,, AND THE SHARP IMAGES, WHAT A TEAM I HAVE PARKINSON AND ...
