Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 USM - Good for BEGINNERS

Date of Review:  Dec 16, 2007
The Bottom Line: The lens is good for beginners, but not for semi-professionals. If you spend a little more money, you can get a much better lens, by giving up the wide end.
Review: I purchased my first SLR camera fairly recently, a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi. It came with the Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens. I sold the lens after using it for a couple of weeks for a Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM lens (The GOOD one, not the junk...

excellent kit lens

Date of Review:  Jun 2, 2005
The Bottom Line: I recomment you spend the extra money on this lense. It is a great lense to get to use to get to know the features of your camera with.
Review: My Canon Digital Rebel came with this lense.

I would recommend that if you are planing to buy a Canon Digital Rebel or Rebel XT, that you spend the little bit of extra money and get the kit lense.

Sharpness:

Canon's lens of disaster

Date of Review:  Aug 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens is disaster. Too many disadvantage.
Review: First of all, I'm a learning photographer. Do it for hobby and enjoy taking good pictures.

This lens is the kit for Canon 350D Digital Rebel. And I learn a lot of photography technique through it. My pro photographer friends suggested me...

Inexpensive and light

Date of Review:  Mar 24, 2008
The Bottom Line: Functional, Thats about all.
Review: This is a VERY inexpensive lens, and it really shows in both the build quality and the optical quality.

It is cheaply built- Mostly plastic, with no focus scale. The autofocus is slow, and sounds like a freight train, especially as...

Nice Paperweight - Written For a First Time Owner

Date of Review:  Jul 9, 2006
The Bottom Line: Do not purchase an expensive paperweight because this lens has no redeeming value.
Review: I got this lens with the purchase of a Digital Rebel XT. I will not try to "wow" anyone with technical knowledge since I am new to anything other than a point-and-shoot camera.

After taking several classes and getting one-on-one...

Nice little starter lens

Date of Review:  Oct 30, 2007
Review: I have seen so much negativity about this lens which is probably the least expensive EF-S lens you can get from Canon. The lens is not a Canon L glass and yet people tend to compare it to the $1500 lenses, but is so much better than anything on a...

Cheap lens that shows its cheapness

Date of Review:  Aug 18, 2005
Review: This came with my XT. I replaced it as soon as possible because it's such a horrid lens. Nothing comes out sharp. It's barely acceptable for most purposes but for anything decent - forget it.

Many claim to have taken sharp photos with the...
