Author's Review
This is truly a great lens. Up until this point, all of my lenses were zoom lenses and I was worried that I may be at a disadvantage shooting with a prime. I was wrong. This lens, forced me to rethink some of my shots, and it forced me to move instead of moving the camera.
The lens also is a great macro lens. Pictures are always sharp and very crisp. Out of my 4 lenses (70-300, 28-90, 18-55, 100) this is my favorite and my most regularly used lens.
The lens is a little heavy, but the big aperture and quality of images makes up for it. The price is high, but for what you get, its a great deal. With certain digital cameras, there is a focal length multiplier, and so this lens becomes a 160mm macro.
The lens is very fast to focus in medium to bright light, and in low light, its a little slower. USM means its virtually silent.
My one gripe is that it doesn't include the lens hood... come on Canon, I'm paying nearly $500 for a lens and you still want to charge me $60 for a lens hood?!?
