Product Review

Great Machine, Just remember to set up properly

by   comptraderrr ,   Feb 12, 2007

Pros:  Does everything very well. Excellent price.u

Cons:  Need to change setup options if using as network printer. Scanning sensor light on 24/7.

The Bottom Line:  Would buy again if I had it to do over, but I wish there was an option to turn off the scanning light bulb.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

Great machine for a great prices, it does it all, printing, faxing, scanning, photocopying, and network printing.

In print mode, the usual 600 x 600 resolution is excellent, maybe not as crisp as a dedicated print-only laser printer, but it's good enough for any usual printing task such letters and such.

The fax machine works well, and you have a whole host of hook-up options, such as adding an answering machine, auto-sensing of fax vs. voice calls and so forth. So if you want the machine to auto-detect fax or voice and automatically print faxes or send voice calls to the answering machine, you can indeed do so.

The 1200 x 1200 scanner works really well, giving me copies of printed photos that look very close to the original.

The photocopier is good enough for everyday stuff, but it isn't as crisp as a dedicated digital photocopier (of which I have a Canon).

The network port does indeed work. If you have a router/switch hooked up to your cable or DSL line, and you hook up various computers to the ports, simply run the setup software, plug the MF5770 into an available port, and you can now print to the printer from any computer hooked up the the router/switch.

The scanner/photocopier sensor light is on 24/7. This was designed in on purpose, for it's supposed to maximize the life of the bulb. I called Canon to confirm. The question becomes: how long does the bulb last, how much to replace, and can I do it myself? Hmm...

Other notes:

1) You have to also hook up the USB cable to a computer if you want to use the scanner. You cannot network scan. Yes, you can have both the ethernet cable and USB cable hooked up to the Canon at the same time.

2) The default setup options result in the the machine causing my Linksys wired router/switch to constantly reset (i.e. continuously after a day of being hooked up, and the only way to resolve is to unplug the printer power, and the re-plug. Then after another day, it happens again). The permanent solution is to go into the printer's options menu and set for manual IP addressing and manual Ethernet detect.
