Product Review

Think Twice, Nice Try But...

by   tonibuster ,   Nov 28, 2006

Pros:  Inexpensive, looks nice, small footprint, large LCD display, nice copies, easy ink loading

Cons:  Paper tray sticks, phone quality poor, no USB cable, long set up time

The Bottom Line:  I would caution anyone who buys this to make sure their paper tray and phone are acceptable before they spend much time setting up the machine.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I bought one of these on Nov 1, 2006. I was impressed with the number of features it offers at an inexpensive price. However, I ended up taking it back to store because of several problems. The main one was that the paper tray stuck in the machine. Therefore I couldn't change the paper, or use the photo paper tray function. I was thoroughly disappointed, as I thought their paper tray system would be superior to the old HP printers, (I had two of them and both developed problems grabbing the paper.)
Anyway, after 3 e-mails, I got one back asking me to call the customer service department. The technician on the phone was very nice and talked me through taking the back off the machine, and using a butter knife to coax the paper tray out. He assured me that this has only happened once before. After I hung up, I tried to use the paper tray, and it was stuck again. I must have gotten a bad unit, missing a part or something. The thought of taking the back off, and using a butter knife each time was too much for me. So I sent another e-mail to Brother, and they sent me one back again requesting that I call their customer service department regarding their warranty. This entails quite a long time on hold, each time you call. At this point I decided to take it back to the store.
Also, the phone feature is made very cheap. The handset has a poor sound quality, and you have a lot of static on the answering machine, at least we did, even though I was careful to record our message with no background noise. There is also a long delay with phone calls, the phone must wait quite a while to determine if the call is a fax or not. Messages are also full of static. However, the phone system is easy to use. The fax feature seemed to work well, however I only used it once, to register at Brother, and never got a reply. This might be because I didn't have the fax set up right.
Print quality is ok. The resolution is good, but the ink is not as vibrant as the HP ink. I had some pictures turn out well, and others were poor quality.
I guess when you get several features at the price of only a few, they have to cut corners somewhere. They decided to do this with the features I use most. If you only print pictures once in awhile, this might be a good enough machine for you.
