Author's Review
I bought this serger because it was within my budget, and I trust the Brother name. I have been very pleased.
I sew garments for myself and my daughter and it has made this a pleasure it is so easy to use.
1. Threading - a snap, the guide is printed right on the machine. I recommend to simply use two or three colors for seam finishing, you can always use the small spool containing the thread that matches your fabric for the needle, and use the large spools that don't exactly match for the looopers.
1.5 = Needles - only problem here is when you change to two needle, you have to insert them both at one time, which can be sort of tricky, but it just takes some getting used to.
2. Cleaning and oiling are easy too, only a couple of places to oil, much better than my all metal machine which requires oiling at many points.
3. Attachments - the White I looked at came with a whopping 10 feet, but was more expensive and I knew I would never use those feet on a serger. I only use it for garment seams, and rolled hems. But, it comes with spool size converters so use any size spool or cone; nets, lint brush, tweezers, blind stich foot and regular foot, needle pack, and soft cover. The cover is cheap and I will get a hard cover asap.
4. Rolled hems - May not produce the same quality as a much more expensive serger, but mine came out just fine using Wooly Nylon thread. Made beautiful placemats with this machine.
5. Only con is that it is a little on the loud side. But, I don't sit and serge all day so it does not bother me.
6. I do find the foot pedal and casing to seem very cheap. I do wonder how long this will last. But, you have to understand that I am used to my all metal machine, which is 20 years old and very heavy. This has just taken some getting used to as most machines today are filled with plastic.
7. stich quality: I have sewn on every thing from sheers to heavy denim on this machine, and with the right needles, I get a perfect stich every time. I use Maxilock thread, middle of the road, nothing expensive. You do have to adjust tensions and such, but I always buy enough fabric so I can experiment on both my machines to get a perfect stitch and it is well worth buying that extra half yard or so!! This machine's stiches are very professional looking. I sew for a picky 10 year old who never really liked what I made her before. Now, I have the pleasure of hearing her say it looks like we bought it at the store.
8. Instruction: great, there is a helpful video and also the manual is great. Many pictures telling you what could be wrong with your stich, recommendation tables, and tips on decorative stiches you can do. All the illustrations are clear and the wording is easy to understand, and thorough
One last note, this machine has marks on the front for different seam widths. The prominent one is the 5/8", but the rest are not marked, and the manual does not tell you about these marks, but the video does.
Yes, I would highly recommend this machine for the novice serger. I paid only $125.00 for mine brand new on ebay.
