Author's Review
I purchased my Brother 1034D from Amazon.com. Since I had not used a serger in years, I was nervous about being able to operate it, but after getting started my fears quickly went away!
The serger arrived pre-threaded, so from the moment I opened the box I was able to start sewing. This was very helpful, as I could see how the machine worked before trying to thread it myself. When I finally got the courage to take on threading myself I used the DVD that came with the machine and followed the instructions step-by-step.
It took me an hour or two and lots of fabric scraps to get the hang of threading. But once I did, it was a breeze. Threading is definitely not as easy as a regular sewing machine, but it is certainly not hard :) I have had the machine for about two months and can pretty much thread it with my eyes closed now. At first having four tensions to adjust was a little overwhelming, but after a little practice it is easy to get it right.
The stitch that I use the most is the 3-thread rolled hem. I use the serger for my business for several hours each day and love it more every time I use it! In fact, I have joked with my husband that if I had to choose between my serger and him, it would be a tough decision. I am a novice user and have a lot to learn in terms of features and different stitches, but with the help of the DVD I am pretty confindent that this will not be a probem.
I have heard people mention that this model is a little loud, but I don't consider it any noisier than my normal sewing machine. (Since I live in a small apartment with neighbors on all sides, I usually notice if something is too loud.)
