Author's Review
Note: My apologies for this being nothing like my past reviews, I'll try to update this when I get a chance to write something a little more solid and descriptive.
In 1996 I was talking to a few co-workers about a movie that was coming out called Broken Arrow, a movie starring John Travolta, Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis. I knew this movie was going to be great cast wise, but I just didn't know if the movie would be good though. Being a fan of all three actors, I knew this would be one of those movies I had to check out. After seeing the movie I was very satisfied with it, although some of the scenes were predictable.
On a early morning exercise, 2 pilots fly a Stealth Bomber in Utah carrying 2 Nuclear Warheads, one of the pilots, Maj. Vic 'Deak' Deakins (John Travolta), having planned the whole thing out turns on the U.S. Military and his friend Capt. Riley Hale (Christian Slater) stealing the 2 warheads and holding them for ransom. Before ejecting, the warheads are released where associates are waiting for their arrival. Unaware of the whole plan, Riley escapes from being killed by Deak to land and noticed by Park Ranger, Terry Carmichael (Samantha Mathis). Not being able to tell her right away, Riley warns Terry that if they don't find Deak fast, they are screwed.
The film also stars Howie Long (yes the NFL great) and Kurtwood Smith of That '70s Show, not knowing who Kurtwood was at the time, I knew he looked familiar when the Fox series hit airwaves. I thought it was great seeing Howie in a movie action packed as this, I have to admit his acting is pretty good. The film is full of action and the special effects are fantastic. The train scene was wicked, I wont spoil it but so much action on that train makes up for some of the dull parts in the movie (all though there's really not that many).
For those who remember the film Pump Up The Volume, Samantha was also in this film with Christian and I thought they had great chemistry. When I heard that the two were going to be teaming up again, I was ready for this movie to open up. For what it's worth, this movie is one of those you will find yourself watching every now and then. Some of the scenes were a little bogus, but it's a movie, and you just have to expect some of that stuff.
I'm giving this movie a 5/5 star rating, the action, the cast, the movie all around was great. Although the plot was kinda poor, I still can't see giving it a lower rating just for that. When you find a movie that can make up in places it lacks, you know it's well worth the money spent. I recently purchased the DVD, it contains the trailer, sound settings, and subtitles. Unfortunately there are no deleted scenes, so be prepared if you were expecting it to be loaded. John Woo, who directed this movie is someone I'm still not familiar with. I've seen a couple other movies he's directed, but I think he did a pretty good job for his earlier work.
