Author's Review
First of all, let me state that I drive a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with a soft top and off-road tires, so road noise is an important factor for me. Also, my Jeep is a straight gear, so handsfree is also a matter of safety.
My phone is a Motorola RAZRvc, so I thought purchasing a Motorola headset would give me better service. I started out with a Motorola H700 I purchased from ebay. It was a nice size, good fit, but the sound levels were very limited and I could barely hear the conversation while driving. On another note, I found out also that my Motorola H700 was a fake! Apparently, there is a big problem with counterfeit H700's. I purchased another from a different seller, only to find out that it too, was a phony. Also, the second one had a ton of static.
At that point, I began exploring other brands. I researched on ZDnet.com and Epinions.com and found that Jabra's, in general, tend to be pretty reliable.
I looked at the Jabra BT800 and settled on purchasing one the next day. After using the BT800 for one day, I decided it was not for me. It is too large, and uncomfortable. The lure of the LCD screen was nice, but really, what do you need a screen on the headset for? Plus, there was still a road noise problem, as the mic tended to pick up just as much road noise as it did my voice. Voice-dialing didn't work with the BT800 either, and my RAZR would not automatically pick up the headset when it was turned on. I always had to tell the phone to search for the headset.
Upon returning the BT800, I traded for the BT250. I am really glad I did!
Thus far, the BT250 has performed extremely well. My wife says that when talking to her, my voice is actually louder than the background noise. First positive.
Also, it is the most comfortable headset I've worn. The H700 and the BT800 both tend to "flop around" when I move my head back and forth. I actually tend to forget that I am even wearing it. Second positive.
The BT250 also is picked up by the RAZR every time I turned it on. I have never had to tell the phone to search. Third positive is the charm.
I also like the single-touch answer/hang-up button. The H700 also had only one button, but the BT800 has separate buttons for answer and hang-up. This was a bit hard to get used to. I kept having to remove it and look to confirm which was which.
The volume control is located just below the power/answer button and is very easy to differentiate from the power. The power/answer button has a raised phone icon which is easy to feel when you reach back to answer or adjust the volume.
Overall, the BT250 was a bit larger than I expected, but after putting it on, the fit is great. It also comes with four extra earpieces for getting just the right fit.
It is also very easy to switch ears, as all it entails is popping off the rubber earpiece and turning it around. The BT800 could switch ears, but in putting it on the left, which is where I wear my phone to keep from hitting the seatbelt buckle, it would put the buttons on top and turn the LCD upside-down.
Overall, I am very happy with my BT250. I am actually trying to talk my wife into switching from her H700!
March 29 update:
Someone had commented that I had not made any remarks about battery life. I must admit that I was waiting until the first cycle had run out before commenting.
As of today, the battery life from the first charge on March 23 is still going.
It has been used quite a bit this week and so far I have received no audible low battery warnings.
Let me stop here and say that there is one Con that I have come across. This has to do with the charger. The one that the headset comes with has a "cradle" that the headset slides into to charge, however I have yet to come across a car charger or USB charger. This, to me, is a drawback in that I use the headset while out and about. What if it goes dead while I'm away from home? guess you're just out of luck.
Anyway, I hope this has been helpful information. Thanks to everyone who has rated this review!
