Author's Review
Miley Cyrus's voice is a deepish teen-y girl voice. It has a slightly nasally tenor to it that, rather than making her voice rough and unpleasant, is smooth, pleasant enough, and actually works to give her differing voice some personality. Pleasant enough. Better for describing Miley's Breakout record than her voice; although there are a handful of tracks on the album that I took pleasure in listening to, there are several other tracks that were not so nice and sounded a bit obnoxious, which brought my ears very little enjoyment. Most everything is passable though, the mundane toned track Driveway for instance. With intense streams of electric guitar, it isn't a terrible sounding song, but it is majorly lacking in immediate likability and it has a similar sound to many other songs on the album, a vague feeling of repetition rather than smooth, complementary fluidity flowing through the record.
Fly On The Wall is the worst track of the album for me. It to is mostly composed of electric guitar, as is most of everything on Breakout. The song has a uniquely interesting sound to it that I was instantly partial to. However, there is a sing song-yessence to the track and an echoy chorus, both working to add an obnoxious radiance to Fly On The Wall.
7 Things is the best song of Breakout, the ballad like tempo underneath Miley's wistful singing soon speeding up to a wonderfully upbeat, rock chorus. The track Breakout has a similar quality to it, although a completely different feel; the chorus is delightfully off beat although the song is fast in tempo all the way through. There are subtle alterations in the sound however, which is what gives the song a brightly, off beat persona.
Bottom of the Ocean and These Four Walls are ballads, thankfully breaking away from the overloaded electric guitar sound. However, where Bottom of the Ocean is soft and pretty, the latter ballad is downright boring. Simple Song has much more excitement to it in comparison, the soft song of piano, drums, and electric infusions sounding very mellow with a soft emotion running through it that, unlike the majority, invoked some feeling in me.
Goodbyeis very similar soundwise and feeling wise. Again, I was swept with the soft emotion of in Miley's voice as she sings the soft song. It is not a catchy song though, despite it being nice
I remember when we kissed/ I still feel it on my lips/ The time yu danced with me/ With no music playing/ I remember the simple things/ I remember until I cry/ The one thing I wish I'd forget/ The memory I wanna forget is goodbye
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun has a really good energy, but is also extremely frivolous in sound with and intense lack of effort, quality, and depth. See You Again is the ending track and manages to be extremely catchy and energizing without steams of electric guitar overwhelming it. There are some electronica sort of attributes and they sound really good. Also, I suspect that Miley's voice is synthesized here, her voice reverberating in a pleasant yet unnatural way. Overall, Breakout is okay, a mediocre quality teeny bopper record that is nice enough.
