Sound System - Bose style

I've had LifeStyle 48 System for almost a year. I was very excited to buy it. At the begging the sound was great until I heard other speakers... The size of the systems is great - small compare to other systems. Bose is doing a relatively good job as far as form factor. I was shocked to find out that ethernet jack on the back of the system is not active and the system can't play MP3's and I'm not even talking about video files. So they use proprietary file format for storing music on the hard drive. The playback software interface is not up to the modern standards and doesn't include picture of an albums.
I'm not sure what Bose plan is as far as activating that LAN port, but it's taking them sweet time for sure! And they call main unit media center. Nice try Bose!
So now I'm stock with the system which can do more, but not sure when and how much more it can do! Now, do I have to buy something else if I wanted to play other music formats or video files.
So when you spend almost $4K on it think what exactly you are buying:
Just speakers with 5.1 surround sound?
By the way they are pushing for Bose Information Exchange portal, but there is no way users can post questions, so others can see them. I think Bose don't even check the posts.
Notes:
Bose provide an upgrade program for their systems mostly main unit. Speakers are not included on the upgrade program.

As of now Ethernet jack is not activated on the system.
I hope they update the software so people can utilize that ethernet jack for connecting to the Internet and buying music on line or at least network the system into home network for playing MP3's and other formats. Let's hope they can write something before people start hacking the system!
