Sharon Creech has written many very good stories. But in my opinion, this one is the best.

Salamanca Tree Hiddle: Young native American girl, on a journey to find out truly if her mother is gone. She thinks she must get there before her mother's birthday, and so her mother might come back. Years back her mother left after having a stillborn baby. This is only one of the sad things that happen. If this is too sad for you I suggest you don't read the book. Along the way to Illinois, they stop by all the tourist spots that her mother went by, and she tells stories to her grandparents about one of her friends, Pheobe. I'm not going to tell you everything that happens in the story, but I will tell you that the ending is very good and you won't be able to put it down. I'm only 11 and I loved it.
