Uncle Tom-the perfect slave?

by   goldsungoddess ,  May 24, 2002
Pros: An insight about what slaves may have felt.
Cons: A little seeped in sentimentality.
The Bottom Line: This is a historical novel that has never been out of print since its beginning. You will come away from it understanding the time period a little better.
Review: I read 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' in celebration of Black History Month. Although the author was not a black American, I decided the subject was appropriate for that month.

Uncle Tom's Cabin: A Satire

by   murasaki , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Dec 11, 2001
Pros: Satire, political message
Cons: Weak writing at times, non-PC language

Cons: Over dramatic characters.
The Bottom Line: This is one of those books you read in the sake of cultural literacy, and you end up thoroughly enjoying the story.
Review: I read Uncle Tom’s Cabin about a year ago, and only because it was a historical classic. I wasn’t expecting a great story. I had never really examined the practical results of slavery before; I had only read about the mass effects on a nation. I knew...
