Author's Review
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this book as a kid.
My son has been listening to Books on Tape when we go on long trips, and I decided if he was capable of listening to a tape, then it was time we could start reading longer books together.
I selected two that I remember from my childhood as being my favorites, having read them over and over again. It is funny that when I wnet to the library to find them, I was surprised to see that they were award winners, I did not know that anyone else had read them besides myself.
The two I selected were The 21 Balloons, and My Side of the Mountain.
We are just starting My Side of the Mountain now, having just completed The 21 Balloons. My son (he is four) was fascinated. each day we would pick up the book and review what had happened last. He would ask questions, like Why something happened, or why someone made a decison other than one he would have made, or where the bathroom was on the balloon. He loved the simple illustrations, as they sparked his imagination, rather than replacing it. I for one am having a blast remembering the elements like they were my own memories.
I recommend the 21 balloons, or whatever was your favorite book as a kid, as a great big tube of glue between you and your child. My son recommends it also, but mostly because of the sharks and volcanos.
