It May Be Long But It's Worth Your Time

I was required to read "The Grapes of Wrath" in 11th grade English, but given the chance I'd gladly read it again. "The Grapes of Wrath" was an excellent portrayal of life during the Great Depression. Tom Joad and his family travel all over the United States looking for a job and a place to live after their farmland is taken away. I found this to be a very refreshing storyline because Steinbeck sticks little tidbits of information in here and there. For instance, there is an entire chapter about a turtle crossing the road. While this may confuse some readers, I found that these chapters kept the plot from getting too depressing. This is a very sad and depressing story, but I think we should all realize how terrible life was during the Great Depression. It helps us put the current situation of poverty into focus. I would gladly recommend "The Grapes of Wrath" to anyone who wants to understand the hopelessness of poverty.
