?In the souls of the people, the Grapes of Wrath grow heavy for the vintage??

Date of Review:  Mar 17, 2003
The Bottom Line: This book hardly needs me to recommend it as a great classic. But I will anyways.
Review: Counted among the classics of great American literature, The Grapes of Wrath is the usual suspect for a snapshot of life during the Great Depression, and it is an amazingly clear and vivid one. What is perhaps unexpected is the amount of emotion and...

Steinbeck: America s Most Vulnerable Trampled In The Vineyards Where The Grapes of Wrath Are Stored.

Date of Review:  Feb 27, 2001
The Bottom Line: Epic in scope, intimate in detail, harrowing in tone, one of the most beautifully written novels ever, and arguably the best ever written by an American.
Review: Ask which is THE single greatest American novel, and you can count on the usual meritorious suspects:

?Moby Dick? by Herman Melville is the usual favorite. Some might go for ?Tom Sawyer? or ?Huckleberry Finn? by Mark Twain, or else...

The Grapes of Wrath: America's Greatest Novel!

Date of Review:  Dec 27, 2000
Review: The Grapes of Wrath, written in 1939 by John Steinbeck (1902-1968), is considered by many literary critics to be the greatest of all American novels. This is a book about the Great Depression, and one poor sharecropper family's struggle to survive...

The Grapes of Wrath: Trampling Out the Vintage

Date of Review:  Feb 27, 2001
The Bottom Line: The Grapes of Wrath is a novel about humanity and survival in the face of immense degradation and tragedy.
Review: The Plot

The Joad family, already downtrodden sharecroppers, find themselves forced off the land their family had farmed for several generations. They begin driving west to California, lured by advertisements of good jobs and their own...

Pulitzer Prize Winner The Grapes Of Wrath Banned For Being...Communist?

Date of Review:  Sep 7, 2009
The Bottom Line: Steinbeck finally received a Pulitzer mainly for this novel before he died. I've also enjoyed and reviewed his novella The Pearl.
Review: I've never before read a novel like John Steinbeck's Pulitzer Prize-winning The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, and I doubt I will again. It's not that its staggering story has lost its relevance today because it and its writer are still widely...

Beautiful Losers

Date of Review:  Aug 3, 2000
Review: We are told that God helps those who help themselves. Had the Joad family not been so busy trying to stay alive, they might have taken exception.

The Joads, one of thousands of families forced off their land by the Dust Bowl, try to play by...

THE Great American Novel: The Grapes of Wrath, by John Steinbeck

Date of Review:  Dec 2, 1999
Review: Although many of his works deserve note, including Of Mice and Men and Travels with Charley, I consider The Grapes of Wrath to be the Great American Novel. Steinbeck's tale of the Joad family's travails through the Dust Bowl not only manages to...

Grapes of Wrath is Steinbeck's Masterpiece

Date of Review:  Jan 6, 2006
The Bottom Line: is a-honkerin' like neva befo'.
Review: I've always viewed Steinbeck as Hemingway 2.0. Where Hemingway meanders through panorama, Steinbeck sets forth, always providing direction and purpose. His prose is slightly less conducive, but still projects enough imagery to satisfy Hemingway's...

Grapes of Wrath

Date of Review:  Jun 2, 2000
Review: Though it took me along time to chug through Steinbeck's masterpiece novel, I found it to be one of the more invigorating novels I've read in a long time. It had both outstanding character and setting development, as well as a clear social message...
