A Little Imagination Goes a Long, Long Way.

by   imagine_stars ,  Mar 30, 2004
Pros: Genuine characters, clever chronicling of events
Cons: It's rather short.
The Bottom Line: Unlike several others I can think of, this book actually deserves to be deemed a classic.
Review: Frequently noted on lists of American classic literature, Tom Sawyer is also often included on some libraries' banned book lists, alongside its counterpart, Huckleberry Finn. Why? Because Mark Twain has allegedly filled the novel with ...

Rascal Tom Sawyer is Full of Controversy

by   dantesguide ,  Jul 5, 2001
Pros: Extremely entertaining book that has a sequel better than the first.
Cons: Racial stereotypes that fit the context of the story, but may offend some.
The Bottom Line: This is must read classic literature. Read the books for yourself. Don't rely on Disney to make a movie out of it, and get the same story.
Review: "A modern day warrior... Ooooops! I thought this was the section for the song "Tom Sawyer" by RUSH. Hehe, sorry about that. I see now that it is for that Mark Twain classic "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer". You all...

A major "Tom"

by   Cassady ,  Aug 21, 2001
Pros: Walks the walk, talks the talk of American boyhood adventures and fantasies.
Cons: Not meaningful like "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," but wasn't meant to be.
The Bottom Line: The original American rebel, the original great read, "Tom Sawyer" appeals to the boy in all of us.
Review: Sure, Mark Twain's matchless sequel, "The Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn," is a bona fide masterwork and my nominee for the Great American novel. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is a delightful childhood adventure, but not as thematically rich and...

Brings Back Memories

by   classicspage ,  Jul 12, 2000
Pros: Easy to read, keeps your interest.
Cons: None
Review: It's strange how a book written so long ago can remind me so much of my own childhood. My adventures were never as grand as those in Tom Sawyer and I never was the talk of the town as Tom is in the story, but I had similar dreams of fame and...

An Excellent light-hearted book!!!!!!!!!!!!

by   tarekrashid ,  Feb 9, 2001
Pros: Really good fun reading it!
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: Great book for everyone.
Review: This is one of my childhood favorites! I loved the book from the very beginning. Tom Sawyer, the central character about whose adventures the book is written is a truant and is always in search of trouble for himself and those around him. Tom’s best...

Tom Sawyer, hero or criminal

by   michigan3111 ,  Dec 24, 2003
Pros: great book, a real classic, many everyday comparisons
Cons: you have to read in ye olde southern accent, (yes'm)
Review: In this epic book, you may want to take a look, it takes place in the US of A, but he becomes a pirate in a bay, this little guy gets into trouble, no matter what, even if his (half-brother) Sid cuts, I know my rhyme is pretty lame, and its ...

A Masterpiece of Deceit

by   bethesdalily ,  Jan 26, 2008
Pros: May be interesting to some young boys.
Cons: Deceitful protagonists, superstition and irreverence, mediocre writing--in short, no literary value.
The Bottom Line: This work's poor writing and lack of purpose render it substandard. It teaches deception; if it must be classified as a masterpiece, it is merely a masterful work of mischief.
Review: DISCLAIMER: The following is merely a frame that I have chosen to adapt, for the simple sake of rendering my review more interesting to write. Although I am currently subject to one Professor O., I would never dare to deliver to her such a ...
