Reflections of Society in Literature

by   Bruguru ,  Mar 31, 2003
Pros: Revealing portrait of English society in Dickens' day.
Cons: Hints at anti-semitism.
The Bottom Line: Perhaps not Dickens best work but a must read all the same.
Review: Among all of the works of Charles Dickens, perhaps none explores the plight of those least able to defend themselves in early nineteenth century England, the orphans, as does Oliver Twist. Certainly, Dickens’ novels invariably have some ...

THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY MORE UNFORTUNATELY

by   ANNJSEC ,  Mar 24, 2001
Pros: Glorious use of the English Language.Strong storyline. No sex or violence
Cons: Olde worlde English. No sex or violence
The Bottom Line: Written in a bye gone age it gives readers an insight into how life was in Victorian England. Writers today cannot surpass it.
Review: "Please Sir, I want some more"..........

I wonder if there is anybody who wouldn't be able to give the name of the poor urchin who uttered those words. Oliver Twist and the author, Charles Dickens are known to lovers of classics worldwide...

Oliver Twist: A Look at London

by   nmannie ,  Jan 7, 2001
Pros: very good plot, likeable and believeable characters
Cons: might be a bit long for some readers
Review: Oliver Twist is among the best known books by Charles Dickens. This tale of an orphans progress through 19th century London is an emotional roller coaster guaranteed and an engaging one at that. It is an adventure as well, and a murder mystery, and a...

Oliver Twist is pretty good I say.

by   tkobelsky ,  Jun 25, 2001
Pros: Oliver Twist is an outstanding book and is really fun to red also.
Cons: Oliver is always getting "killed" and he keeps coming back to life.
The Bottom Line: It wasn't at all what I expected from a boy to live through.
Review: Oliver Twist is an outrageous book and is full of adventure for the first page. I think that if Charles writes a sequel to it, it would be just as fun as the first one and would be really good too. If Oliver was a real boy, then I think that he must have...

"More? You want more?" Of course I do!

by   Greatpilgrim , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Jun 13, 2001
Pros: a stirring, familiar story
Cons: long and sometimes boring
The Bottom Line: The most accessible of the Dickens tales, Oliver Twist is a great book with a protagonist that will touch your heart.
Review: Dickens has always been a bit beyond me; I could comprehend the writing, but I couldn’t enjoy it. I did wrestle my way through David Copperfield; I got 2/3 through A Tale of Two Cities; and my mom read Great ...

Want to cry? Read Oliver Twist

by   misharenu99 ,  Dec 14, 1999
Pros: beautiful little boy, exquisitely written, pure anguish
Cons: pure anguish
Review: Anguish! That's all this book is through each and every page. I limit myself to one Dickens book per year after Oliver Twist because I can't handle as much heartache as he delivers any more frequently.

This is the tale of a little orphaned...

A good, but hard read

by   malici ,  Apr 23, 2000
Pros: Wonderfully planned out book
Cons: The language is hard to follow
Review: If you are not familiar with Charles Dickens books, than the language will through you off at first. Though, after you get by the language, you'll find a will written and well planned out book. Oliver Twist the movie, very closely follows the book. If...
