Author's Review
A Lucky Man is a well-written revealing look at the life of a celebrity dealing with fame and illness. It details Michael J. Fox's humble beginnings growing up in Western Canada to his rise to stardom in Hollywood, his struggle with alcohol abuse and finally his decade long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
Beginning with his unforgettable role as Alex on Family Ties, his big break onto the silver screen with Back to the Future, and finally his return to television on the hit tv show Spin City, Michael describes his years of success. After many years of fame and fortune Michael describes waking up one day:
"I woke up to find the message in my left hand. It had me trembling. It wasn't a fax, telegram, memo, or the usual sort of missive bringing disturbing news. In fact, my hand held nothing at all. The trembling was the message."
This "message" would later reveal itself as his first outward symptom of Parkinson's Disease. He details all the emotions he had to deal with after being diagnosed and how he first dealt with the problem by turning to alcohol.
Not only is this story an inspiration to those suffering from Parkinson's and other illnesses, but it also offers insight for married couples as they deal with life's obstacles. He speaks candidly about his family and how a new, positive outlook was gained through a mixed blessing. It will undoubtedly touch everyone's heart.
Written in the 1st person, it flows as though you were sitting chatting like old friends. Fox writes with the same whit and charm that made us love him in the first place!
