Find Adventure and Mystery in the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler

Date of Review:  Sep 28, 2001
The Bottom Line: Though more than 30 years have passed since first published, this book has a timeless appeal for kids who love to live vicariously through characters who are much like themselves...
Review: The world was a much different place in 1968 when author E.L. Konigsburg won a John Newbery Medal for her book, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. For that matter, the world was a much different place a month ago when my...

From the mixed-up mind of a confused reader: I think Mrs. Frankweiler needs help

Date of Review:  Feb 12, 2002
The Bottom Line: I pull this book out once in a while just for entertainment, but there are many other Newberry Award-winners that I recommend more.
Review: I can't say it's an easy job being the voice of dissension amidst a sea of praise, but it's sure an interesting one. I'm truly amazed that there is so much acclaim for this book, and I'm not afraid to go against the crowd. I'm even willing to defy...

Though Mrs. Frankweiler's files be madness, yet there is a method to it

Date of Review:  May 21, 2001
The Bottom Line: This book explores a child's need to be important, to have a sense of self outside of adults, and the pure joy of learning and mysteries.
Review: Dear Saralinda*:

I?ve been searching through stacks of books at our library?s used book store to find books that I think you might like. Don?t get me wrong, this isn?t a chore. I?m rather delighting in the task. I?m finding so many books...

The Strangest Place to Run Away

Date of Review:  Jan 18, 2000
Review: I will admit that the long title scared me at first. I don't know why. It took about four years of sitting on my shelf before I was willing to try it. But once I got past the title, I discovered that From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E...

A treat for all ages!

Date of Review:  Jan 25, 2000
Review: I have always been attracted to books that have strong female characters. This is one I highly recommend.

One of the main characters of this book, Claudia, is unsatisfied with her life at home. She decides to run away to the Metropolitan...

"Boloney, Claudia! It's a great book!"

Date of Review:  Apr 17, 2000
Review: I was in fourth grade -- the beginning of the age of literary discovery -- when the sixth grade class presented the stage version of this story. I was hooked.

I was already a fan of such "running away" books as "Call it Courage" and "My...

I want to live in a museum

Review: This was the very first book that I checked out of the Library with my new card when I was a little girl, but not my last. It was recommended by the librarian and I had the best time reading it. This was many years ago when it first came out and I...

Clever Hiding Place!

Date of Review:  Apr 24, 2000
Review: "From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" is a book that fascinated me as a child. I was very timid and so always loved books about children who were independent and figured out how to make it on their own. True, "Files'" young...

A book that stays with you throughout the years...

Date of Review:  Feb 27, 2000
Review: It isn't often that a book strikes a child as so memorable, she remembers it as an adult. From "The Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" is that book for me. I would really love to see other children reading this book, loving this book as I...
