Author's Review
First of all, let me start with Volume I, which I must say, that I love the cover! A big picture of Angel and Buffy together!
The Watcher's Guide Vol. I covers seasons 1 and 2 of the hit show. Split into different sections, the first being the myth of Buffy, which pretty much lets you know, how vampires were formed, and why there is a slayer.
As Giles said in the first episode," Welcome to the Hellmouth" :
" This world is older than any of you know, and contrary to popular mythology, it did not begin as a paradise. For untold eons, demons walked the Earth, made it their home, their Hell. In time, they lost their purchase on this reality, and the way was made from mortal animals. For Man. What remains of the Old Ones are vestiges: certain magicks, certain creatures...The books tell that the last demon to leave this reality fed off a human, mixed their blood. He was a human form possessed-infected- by the demon's soul. He bit another and another...and so they walk the Earth, feeding. Killing some, mixing their blood with others to make more of their kind. Waiting for the animals to die out and the Old Ones to return."
And later in the same episode, he states:
" Into each generation, a Slayer is born. One girl, in all the world, a Chosen One. One born with the strength and the skill to hunt the vampires, to stop the spread of evil."
Pretty much sums it up.
The second section of the book, is The Sunnydale Guidebook, which takes you around the town, lets you know the local hang out spots for Sunnydales teenagers. The mall, the magick shop, the cemetries for the big bad uglies.
Third section is the character guide, which is pretty cool. It lets you have an insight at the lovable characters of BTVS. Favorite quotes of the characters, and important history.
Fourth section is the episode guide, which takes you episode by episode. Incase you missed any of the shows, this is cool. It lets you know who the guest stars were for the show, gives you the run down of what happened, a sneak peek at what is going to happened, and as always some very funny quotes.
Fifth is going to be the Monster Guide, up close look at the monsters that Buffy and the rest of the Scooby Gang face every week. A behind the scences look at the makeup, and what is involved with the process.
Sixth is BloodLust. A look at the couples ( old and new) on the show. Xander and Cordelia, Buffy and Angel, Willow and Oz, Giles and Jenny, Giles and Joyce, Joyce and Ted, and on and on. You get the picture.
Seventh, is The Behind the Scenes, which is split up into three sections. First is the behind the scenes with the cast of BTVS. Lets you know which movies some of the actors/actresses have been in before, and in any upcoming projects. Like did you know that Anthony Stewart Head ( Rupert Giles) starred in the series of commerical for Foger House Coffee.
A behind the scene with creator Joss Whedon. How he came up with the idea for the hit TV Show. His creative insight.
And last, a behind the scene with the crew of BTVS. A look at the makeup artist, the set designers, writers, and the awesome stunt doubles.
And last, we have section eight, which is a look at the music of our favorite show. You know, the soundtrack which is available, and a look at the songs/bands on the show.
Well, that is a look at the first Volume of the Watcher's Guide, now, lets look at the second Volume.
The second Watcher's Guide is Seasons 3 and 4. And a little thicker than the first Volume. Starts where Vol. I left off.
First section is Buffyverse, which starts with a character guide as well. A look back on our beloved favorites and a look and history at some new members.
Then we look at the pain and heartache they felt. Like Angel and Buffy splitting up and Angel leaving. The Willow and Oz breakup. The pain and heartache of Jenny's death and how it affected Giles. And how, Dru left little Spike.
Next section is the Episode Guide. Again a one by one look at season 3 and 4's episode. Really helpful if you missed one and forgot to set the VCR.
Cast Profiles is next. Kinda same as in the first volume. Just adding our new members like Tara (Amber Benson), and Buffy's new love Riley ( Marc Blucas). Of course there are many other new characters.
Next section is Creating Buffy. Pretty much the same in Vol. I. Behind the scenes look at the crew, Joss Whedon, stuntpeople, designers.
Next is the Bands of Buffy. Gives you a list the songs on BTVS, the bands who performed them and which episode they aired on.
Last section is Merchandising. Lets you know just what collectibles are out there and are soon coming. Like the Nintedo Gameboy Color game already on the market. Which by the way I do have and am addicted to. Also available, are a huge line of teen books and adult books from Pocket books. I have read and own alot of these and hope to read them all. A huge line of BTVS item are available, like the action figures, the cars ( from Johnny Lightening), VHS tapes, wall scrolls, candy bars, collectors cards, frige magnets, shirts, jackets, hats, jewelery, posters, and so on . I have alot of items in my collection. What can I say, I'm a huge fan! The book also saids that in the works is a Playstation game, and a PC game which should be available Spring 2001. So far, I haven't seen or heard anything.
Basically to wrap this, any fan of the show, should definitly get these two books. They are really informative, and funny.
