Perspectivism is the key word

by   william_few ,  May 20, 2003
Pros: it helps you to understand the world
Cons: some hard true things
The Bottom Line: The obscure life of the author must not be a reason for you to pronounce prejudices about this splendid book
Review: This is my first review and I hope I will do it right.
When we talk about Nietzsche´s ´Beyond Good and Evil´ we tend to think of a transcendental world because the title of the book makes us think it.

Actually this book is not about...

Nietzsche Misrepresented and Misunderstood.

by   CPXB ,  Jul 23, 2000
Pros: Beautiful aphorisms, profound insights for the careful and dedicated.
Cons: Hard to read, he's a misogynist by any standard.
Review: Nietzsche. Wow. Still controversial after more than a century.

There is good reason for this. His books are difficult to read, intentionally. Even the title of this one, Beyond Good and Evil is simply a partial quotation from one of...

Reductio ad absurdum - a must read

by   akshobhyavajra ,  May 2, 2001
Pros: Thought-provoking and stimulating - a preferable translation from German
Cons: Don't take Nietsche too serious or you'll end up on Thorazine
The Bottom Line: A must read for anyone who takes a serious interest in the development of philosophy, especially existentialism and nihilism.
Review: Nietsche is best read while keeping in mind the dictum that
"truth is not to be acquired, but to be romanced".

In Beyond Good and Evil Nietzsche demolishes the philosophical prejudice of his time while adding his own. Howbeit, his...

Will To Power

by   dhalgren13 ,  Aug 11, 2001
Pros: A strong and poetic look at the nature of the self and will to power
Cons: Often misunderstood and mixed with Nazism, a little dated in ideas on women
The Bottom Line: Though outdated in some of his thinking, Nietzsche remains right on the mark, telling us the dangers of dogma, the problems with philosophy and the hope of mental/ spiritual evolution
Review: Nietzsche is easily one of the most profound and most misunderstood writers and thinkers of all time, his philosophy which involved the idea of a continuing evolution of morals and ethics, a strong will that utilizes it's own insecurities rather than...

Tension of Classical and Modern

by   peabody23 ,  Sep 1, 2000
Pros: Challenging, life-changing philosophy
Cons: Very advanced and difficult to understand on your own; find someone who knows Nietzsche to talk to!!
Review: I was just thinking about Nietzsche last night on the way home from work. He was a brilliant thinker, even with his strong prejudices and huge self importance, and he predicted in some way the state of intellectualism today. Or maybe a better word was...

Hand Me That Horsewhip, Will You?

by   mshawpyle , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Nov 21, 1999
Pros: An object lesson in what is wrong with thought over the past century
Cons: An object lesson in what is wrong with thought over the past century - and the boarding station for the trains to Dachau
Review: Here it is, folks, live on center stage, the Dionysian fury of a philosopher losing his marbles. C. S. Lewis, in his brilliant Preface to Paradise Lost, pointed out that the line Milton gives Satan in the poem, 'Evil be thou my good',...
