An Antiwar Masterpiece - The Anti-War Write Off

Date of Review:  Mar 30, 2003
The Bottom Line: The best novel I have ever read.
Review: This book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped...

The End of Innocence: All Quiet on the Western Front

Date of Review:  May 6, 2004
The Bottom Line: One of the greatest novels of the twentieth century, it will open your eyes to the horror of war.
Review: When it comes to dying for your country, it s better not to die at all. Paul Baumer

Erich Maria Remarque used his personal experiences to write the most powerful novel on World War I, All Quiet on the Western Front.

On June 22,...

The perfect sentence? (entry in the Great Canadian One-Liner Write-Off)

Date of Review:  Apr 8, 2001
The Bottom Line: In a war novel full of keen observation and powerful writing, Erich Maria Remarque has written one of the most moving and insightful sentences ever crafted.
Review: Human communication is a miracle. It is perhaps the most convincing evidence that there might be a God or gods. We convey information to each other that is so rich and so complex, it makes it possible to believe that we have been touched by the...

NOTHING NEW

Date of Review:  Jul 12, 2003
The Bottom Line: I bet the person who coined the phrase 'The War To End All Wars' feels a bit silly now.
Review: I have a morbid fascination for WW1 - The Great War (there's an oxymoron for you) - particularly the Western Front.
I will read every book I can find, watch every movie/documentary, and I've visited most of the battleground sites and museums...

A Book Everyone Should Read

Date of Review:  Jun 12, 2003
The Bottom Line: More than a novel, a first hand account of World War I and an indictment against war itself.
Review: When Erich Maria Remarque published All Quiet on the Western Front in 1929, a novel that details the horrors of the First World War, he knew from experience what he was writing about. That is because Remarque himself served as a soldier in the...

The Horrors of War: Up Close and Personal

Date of Review:  Apr 14, 2004
The Bottom Line: This is a must read for everyone because all of us are affected by the tragedy of war.
Review: I had heard wonderful praise about this book for years. Some of my friends told me that they had read it in school; unfortunately I did not have such an assignment. When I mentioned that my favorite book was Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo,...

All perspective

Date of Review:  Feb 11, 2000
Review: All Quite on the Western Front is based on the experiences of a young man from his time in school until the close of the war on the French-German border of WWI.

I became thoroughly intrigued with WWI when I was a student in my ninth grade...

All Quiet On The Western Front: Kat and Paul?

Date of Review:  May 4, 2000
Review: As All Quiet on the Western Front progresses and develops, there is one key aspect of Remarque?s writing that is fascinating to follow. At the beginning, when Kat and Paul share a goose together, in a seemingly peculiar wartime ritual, the reader...

Not that Quiet

Date of Review:  Jan 19, 2003
The Bottom Line: a great read that helps show disillusionment and alienation with an anti-war sentiment
Review: Imagine being sent off to fight in the first real war in a century during your senior year of high school. You were told that you were the "Iron Youth," but realize the fault in this when the first explosive knocks you millions of years away from...

War as seen through enemy eyes

Date of Review:  Apr 29, 2000
Review: All Quiet on the Western Front does for the reader what no documentary, poem nor picture could do. All Quiet on the Western Front makes the reader feel one with the enemy and helps toward an understanding that these were men fighting, not numbers...
