Product Review

Not Great

by   silversleuth ,   Oct 22, 2007

Pros:  Easy to use dials. Crumb tray. Lasted 32 months-better than some.

Cons:  High heat scorched white exterior. Baking cycle required preheating. Uneven toasting.

The Bottom Line:  This oven is OK for an inexpensive serviceable oven with good features and size, but I will try to find a better replacement.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

This oven gave us 32 months of passable service. It is still half functional as the toaster knob still works, but not the knob that controls bake and broil. We will shed no tears because it never cooked or toasted as well as others we have had.

I don’t think the oven we have is a convection oven. I thought that was perhaps an error, because we do have the TRO210 that looks exactly like the picture, but it has no fan.

The baking cycle required preheating or food would scorch. Once the oven was preheated, baking was pretty consistent. The broiling temp was uncontrollable and hotter than I preferred. The shiny white exterior has scorch marks that were probably caused by the high heat.

Toasting is very uneven, requiring us to flip and rotate mid-toasting to get somewhat evenly browned toast. The edges of English muffins usually burn while the centers stay soft and lightly browned.

I am starting the shopping process, but am discouraged by all the bad reviews for the available ovens I have seen so far. After going through three Black and Decker ovens in ten years or so, we would love to find a more reliable oven with acceptable features. This is the first one that had quartz rods for heating elements. These seem to have held up pretty well, but are showing sign of uneven heating. The previous ovens had carbon rods and I believe they were usually the point of failure.

Any recommendations for a large, not extra-large, toaster oven would be appreciated.
