So far not a bad machine
Date of Review: Aug 21, 2009
The Bottom Line: For 80 bucks this machine will do nicely.
UPDATE: I have done baked potatoes in this machine and they came out WONDERFUL!! Unlike my micro, the centers were beautifully done in the center. My micro, which I still have to write about because it is new also just doesn't cut it with the potatoes (isn't that the way? All your machines go down at once).
The best thing about this I found is that it makes a great roast beef. My roast beef and pot roasts have always had something missing - flavor and texture and all in all they always came out too overdone. In this machine, I put the temp on the lowets setting, 200, and let it go for the two hours. MAN OH MAN the top came out nice and brown (oiled it first) and the center was so nice and rare that the juices just poured out when I got to it. The front and back were medium and still juicy and tender. This machine is a wonder.
Now to bake cookies and cakes which NEVER turn out for me. Yes, I am/was a lousy cook. Update real soon.
My EuroPro convection oven just recently died after 12 yaers. BOOHOO!! After searching the net for a new oven and getting totally confused, I went to Target (I do almost all my major shopping there) and found this B&D digital oven.
I have had it for about 2 weeks now and have done cornish hens (baked, no convection) - juicy and tender; pork chops - (baked w/convection) the thin ones came out a little dry but the thick ones (baked w/no convection and bone in) were wonderful; veal chops (thick and broiled) absolutely delicious.
I have a wonderful toaster from Krups, so I will probably not use the toaster on this thing. Other than that, it is digital which I find most handy. It preheats itself, has self temperature and counts down the minutes. The only thing that might be a problem would be that you can only use the convection in the bake mode.
The controls are easy enough to use once you get the hang of them - timer, bake, convection, broil, toast, bagles, cookies, pizza, frozen snacks, potatoes and of course start and stop. Do NOT lose the instructions until you are absolutely familiar with the controls.
This oven will do baked potates (so does my microwave but the micro takes too long) but I will have to update you on that because I haven't made any in this yet. It goes from 200 to 450 degrees.
The design is gorgeous, at least I think so (my EuroPro was just plain). The buttons stand out but the printing on the panal could be a little larger/thicker (we old folks can't see too well, lol). It remembers your last setting (unless you unplug it or turn the power surger off as I do) and you can set any temp and times you want (read the instructions!!!!)
It has a non stick interior which is helpful especially when your kid likes cornish hens and they splatter. The roof is the only spot that doesn't have the non stick so clean that as soon as the machine cools down. The back is stretched out so that it can fit the pizza pan that came with it (plus a broil rack, a bake/drip pan.
The back also has these things sticking out so that you can't just back it up to a wall - it leaves a space for air to circulate. This machine does get VERY HOT so always have an ovglove or some such thing around. It has a removable crumb tray too.
For just under $80, so far it has been a good machine. Will it last 12 years like my EuroPro? Only time will tell.
