Author's Review
Back to school,
Back to school,
To prove to dad that Im not a fool.
Ive got my lunch packed up,
My boots tied tight,
I hope I dont get in a fight
That was a great song that Billy sang during the movie. It happened right before the school bus came by his house.
Billy Madison has just been told that his fathers (Darren McGavin) hotel empire is not being handed down to him. Billy tries to convince his dad to give the company to him, and he declines because he had to pay Billys way through elementary, junior, and high school. In a fit of rage (Sandler-rage, its different then real rage), Billy suggests that he go through school all over again, all by himself, 2 weeks per grade. Satisfied with his sons proposal, he arranges for Billy to go back to school. Billy meets challenges, comes across a teacher he has a crush on (Bridgette Wilson), acquires new friends and most importantly, has lots of funny experiences.
This movie was nothing short of comedic genius. I laughed my way through the whole thing, and I through it was brilliant. I simply loved it. Hes made many other comedies, and I think this one is among the best.
The characters were all great and funny in their own ways. Billy Madison was by far the best one. Adam Sandlers comical talents and genius really shined though in Billy Madison. The kids in this movie are also great. Their personalities are very childish (in a good way) and its uproarious how well Billy blends in with them. Billys arch nemesis, Eric (Bradley Whitford), is also excellent in his role. He really has the evil character thing down. Everything about Eric is wicked, from his wicked laugh, all the way down to his wicked schemes. Bridgette Wilson is great at playing the tempting teacher that Billy wants. Among all the school pandemonium, Billy confides in his fathers right hand man, Carl (Larry Hankin). Larry does a good job at playing a noble businessman, and the old friend of Billys.
The storyline is pretty funny. If you just think about how funny it would be to be one of those kids joined in a class by an adult that lazy and immature, youll understand why the movies premise is so sidesplitting. Anyway, I think each scene is brilliant. There is always at least one roll-on-the-ground-with-laughter moment per scene. I think my favorite part is the field trip sequence. Its just jam-packed with great moments such as; Billy peeing his pants, the bus driver (Chris Farley) eating all the kids lunches, its just great, I loved it.
Adam Sandlers brand of humor is so fresh; he blends the infantile silliness with the sarcasm into all the greatest scenes. Personally, I enjoy his humor and I have to admit Ive watched this movie at least 10 times.
For those of you who like the intelligent, clever type of humor, this movie isnt for you. There is no intelligence in Billy Madison; its just a bunch of genius immature laughs that will leave you begging for more.
If you liked Adam Sandlers role on SNL, or his performance in Happy Gilmore, Bulletproof, Wedding Singer, the Waterboy, or Little Nicky, then youll love Billy Madison. If entertaining humor, with little substance is your thing, watch Billy Madison. Basically, if you like the type of humor thats easy to watch, and doesnt make you think, then you should watch Billy Madison under all circumstances.
