Author's Review
Recorded under the alias "Luke The Drifter", This album offers a brief look into the thoughtful side of legend Hank Williams Sr. It also serves to prove that although Hank was uneducated by todays standards, he was well read and had an unique gift in his ability.
Many of the songs contained therein have a high moraled, religious tone. It might be said that they reflect on a code of conduct that Hank might have tried, or wished that, he could have lived by. The remainder of the material is simply songs about life and love.
The title song, recorded January 10, 1950, was a combination of an old hymn and a poem from the 19th century. The poem "Should You Go First" was found in many homes in the south, during the 1940s, in a book "Poems That Touch The Heart". It is there that Hank might have read it and although he wasn't the first to record the song, he made it his own due to his superb style and performance.
The songs featured that are from from Hank's pen offer evidence of his unique ability to paint a picture from plain, common, everyday english. There is nothing fancy, but he easily gets his point across. This is what has made Hank Williams Sr. a legend.
