Product Review

Great sound and comfort!

by   gorgon_123 ,   Dec 20, 2002

Pros:  Decent sound, good isolation, comfortable (velour earpads!), affordable.

Cons:  Too hot to wear in the summer!

The Bottom Line:  Still using the earbuds that came with your discman? Do yourself a favor and invest in these phones – your ears will thank you.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Once you graduate from the stock headphones that came with your portable CD player, you begin to realize how good music can really sound. I'm a student and don't have a lot of money to spend on fancy stereo equipment, so investing in a decent set of headphones has been worth my while.

My primary listening source is an old Sony Discman (D-E301), but I do pair my phones with a homemade headphone amplifier and my Denon DCM-370 CD player. I use the discman on the bus and subway, and these phones provide excellent isolation that let you ignore the noise of morning traffic and crying babies, without having to crank up the volume (and potentially damage my hearing).

At home though, my source is the Denon and I have to say that music has never sounded so good. The mid-range is crisp and articulate and the bass is solid but controlled, never blurring the recording.

It terms of comfort I have to honestly say that I never thought headphones could feel this good. The velour earpads are soft and silky, even after two years of almost daily wear. The only downside to the earpads is that in the summer they are unbearably hot. Luckily (for my headphone listening at least) I am in Canada and 75% of the year these phones actually help keep me warm. But for that other 25% they cook my head a few degrees too hot.

Like anything though, these headphones are not for everyone. For the more discerning audiophile who is already interested in headphone hi-fi, it may be worthwhile to move up the food chain a little and take a long hard look at some Grados or Sennheisers. But as an introductory pair of quality headphones, it's hard to go wrong with these.
