Author's Review
I am a fan of Heavy Metal to Jazz and everything in-between. I have to say, there is nothing that will beat the sound of Smooooooth Jazz through a pair of Grado's, 325's and up. But every now and then I like to throw on Judas Priest "Live from Memphis" or Metallica Live "And Justice for All - Live Binge set. And at this point the Grado's don't cut it. They don't deliver the punch required for a live concert. So my search began.
To make a long story short, I have tried everything from JVC to Sony to Koss to Sennheiser, all about the $400 dollar range and down.
Then I came across these cans "Beyerdynamic DT 250" with a little help from the people at Headroom. These cans with the "Little Amp" - is the best thing I have heard in my two year Quest.
Just a note on Portability. There for home stereo or Studio, so they are excellent for the purpose they were designed. You put them on and listen, then you put them in a good headphone bag when you are done and hang them near your stereo. Perfect.
The sound was so defined. The bass was controlled with no fatiguing. The mids and highs were perfect. The sound produced has to be heard to be believed. There was no parts of the sound that overpowered other parts. The problem I found with the Senn's is that the bass muddles everything out, they do not let the natural sound of the concert come thru. Whereas the Beyerdynamic DT 250's produce the most natural sound I have heard. I am not talking a little better than Sony or Senn, but allot better.
The sound stage is exceptional, more than I expected - being these are closed cans. I put on Diana Krall and could not believe how close they come to my Grado's.
I recommend strongly, unless you have a high end audiophile system, that you purchase the "Headroom Little Amp". Not that the cans need the extra power to run, for they will run fine on most systems, since they are only 80 ohms, but more clean power means the world and that is what the "Little" delivers - clean power. The Power has the audio in it, so if you have some good electronics in your headphone amp then your power supply has to match. This is what makes this amp so appealing, it has some good electronics and a good power supply but, you can upgrade the already awesome sound with better electronics and power supply to have a near reference system. The Amp grows with you over time if you so wish and finances afford it.
Even if you have a cheap $500 dollar system. Plug these cans into the "Little" Amp, and hang on. It is like purchasing a pair of $10,000 dollar B&W Speakers for only $400.
I know this is a headphone review, but I just wanted to share my experience with these headphones, and the amp was a big part of that experience. So many people are only a few hundred dollars away from near reference sound and they do not even know it............
Are they Comfortable "Perfect". Wait till you slide these beauties on. Like the other review said, like sliding into silk PJ's
