A couple of months ago, after turning on the heat in the house, the air as usually happens started to get a little bit on the dry side. So off I went to the purchase a humidifier for my house. After shopping around a little while I decided to purchase the Essick Air 4D7 800 5.5 Gallon Humidifier which was on sale for $149
I mainly decided to purchase this model because the box states that it is a whole house humidifier that humidifies 2700 square feet. Seeing as though I live in a average sized 3 bedroom ranch style home, this was more than enough for me. This model also, IS NOT the type that sprays a heated mist into the air, which would cost more to run because you have to heat the water.
This model does require a little assembly, but it probably took me longer to unpack it from the box than it did to put together. I had it together in less than 5 minutes.
It measures about 26" wide, 21" tall, and 12" deep. Features an air filter, high output wick, wheels so it can be easily moved, (yes it does roll pretty good on carpet) two, 2 1/2 gallon water bottles and a digital display that shows the fan speed setting, room humidity level, as well as the set humidity level. It also has indicator lights to let you know when one of the water bottles is empty.
I didn't know what was meant by a "wick" but it kind of looks like a really thick filter. It's purpose is to soak up the water from the bottom of the tank and to moisturize and filter the air as it passes through. The wick should be replaced, probably once a year if you use this a lot. Replacements are no doubt available where you purchase this humidifier or any other place you would find this type of product.
The digital display allows you to easily set the desired humidity level as well as the speed of the fan. The fan has 15 speed settings and you can set the humidity level in your home anywhere from 30 - 100% The fan on this unit does get a little loud at the higher speed settings. The unit automatically turns itself on and off to keep the desired humidity level.
The water bottles are easily refilled using a hose that comes with this model. The hose has an adapter that fits most household faucets. I have found that with this unit set at a 40% humidity level that I have to refill a bottle every week or so. (this is in the winter with the heat running often) The unit will continue to function as long as there is some water in at least one of the bottles.
When this is running, it pulls in air from the back of the humidifier, and blows out through the top. I would recommend keeping it an inch or two away from the wall to provide for sufficient air flow.
I have noticed that this humidifier must be helping me out as far as dry skin goes. Usually, at this time of the year, (february) I would have to apply lotion to the dry skin on my hands. This year, things are fine! No dried cracked hands, or itchy skin.
This product does a good job, I haven't had a problem with it at all.
