Belvedere makes me proud to be Polish!
Date of Review: Jun 15, 2001
The Bottom Line: Smooth, crisp, no aftertaste, perfect straight - if you like vodka made from rye - Belvedere is the brand for you!
I have been drinking Belvedere for at least 2 years & have yet to find another brand that I enjoy more (although Kettle One comes close & is an acceptable alternative when Belvedere is not on the menu).
I think Belvedere is best enjoyed (like most vodkas)directly from the freezer & I prefer it straight - or with 3 ice cubes & a lime. I am not a vodka martini fan, but if you are, I would suggest another brand. Because Belvedere is made with 100% rye grain (as opposed to say Chopin which is potato) and distilled 4 times, it has a smooth texture of it's own that I find does not blend well with vermouth.
Pouring from the freezer it reminds me of mercury - it glides out of the bottle.
What I really like about Belvedere is that it has no discernible aftertaste (unlike say Absolute) and only a hint of sweetness at the first sip. It's a great accompaniment to caviar & herring. It also makes an enjoyable after dinner drink.
On the rare occasions that I do mix it, my favorite drink is a Moscow Mule (Fill a copper mug with ice, squeeze a quarter lime over, then add 50% vodka and 50% Jamaican ginger beer - found in the international foods isle). The marriage of flavors is unbelievable!
My boyfriend is a vodka tonic fan and he has been a loyal Belvedere drinker as long as I have. He likes how the smooth consistency of the Belvedere blends with the fresh lime & Canada Dry.
Another plus is the bottle - not only is it beautiful (the Polish Presidential Palace seen through the snow covered trees is a work of art!) but the curve of the mouth makes pouring clean & perfect and the cork absorbs any excess condensation allowed into the bottle during use.
Belvedere is an excellent sipping vodka and is tasty with tart mixers, especially limes, but does not blend well with sweeter mixers - so if you enjoy screwdrivers go with the 100 proof Absolute!
Definitely my favorite vodka on the market!
